I heard an interesting article on the radio, about how a bunch of Muslim countries, Malaysia, Indonisia, and at least one or two otheres, we're releasing videos they referred to as 'giving voice to the other 90%', featuring the acts of ISIS, and comparing them to quotes from the Quran, and I think there was also video footage of other Muslims, I think a specific incident they mentioned was a group of Muslims standing arm in arm in front of a church in I believe Egypt to protect the Christians from harassment.
Anyways, the idea was the governments were trying to sponsor these videos by prominent faith and political leaders in an effort to show how un-Islamic ISIS really is.
I thought it was interesting, and wanted to listen to the whole story.
BUT I CAN'T FIND IT ONLINE.
I don't know what station it was! I sounded like NPR, but it could have been BBC or something of the sort. The hosts had accents.
Anyone else hear it? Or know of the story from a different source?
ETA Because I can't spell, and to add that looking things up on my phone is SUPER hard.

What did you guys think?? It sounded like a really powerful idea to me. I wonder if the Muslim community in the US would do something like this? Broadcast it on all the major tv stations?

They better if they want people not to be suspicious of them. They really need to stand up for their beliefs if they are not part of the terrorism and if they want to segregate Islam from the terror.

So if a handful of muslims stand in front of a church, it's going to excuse the millions?
I think it sounds more like a deflection tactic.

Even the widest estimates put the numbers of all terrorist groups in the few hundred thousands.
There are over a billion (or is it two?) Muslims.
That is not even 1%.
I heard it was .2% of Muslims who are radicalized.
The program I heard explained that the radicalized people take every single word of the Koran literally. Nothing is a parable, nothing is a story in their eyes. It's all to be taken literally. And that is where they differ from the other 99.8%. They believe the Koran is full of parables and lessons to be learned - much like the bible.
And Lily, Muslims are all over TV and radio denouncing the acts of the terrorists. If you have not heard them, you aren't listening.

You are under the misguided impression that the two are exclusive of each other.
Truth is, they are one in the same.

You can't gripe that they aren't denouncing the violence when you say you have seen them doing just that ! And then you think you know what's in their hearts as they denounce it?! Wow.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
But when you are in public, grocery store, dinner, movies, mall, school, any where, and you see a woman in a head scarf or a guy in whatever it is they call their garb, or just someone of middle eastern decent, does it cross your mind? Even for just a split second, do you wonder if they are part of the group that wants to kill anyone who is not a part of their religion?
Cause I do. I wonder what's under that jacket, what's in their cars, their homes.
Call it whatever you want.
I don't trust muslims. Period.

It might be time for a little paranoia. It might be what saves you from being one of the victims. How many will die before you can actually admit they want us dead?

No Lily. I don't. Not at all. Every time you see a white guy do you wonder if he is a serial killer or a child molester? Every white guy?
There are a lot of Muslims in this small town that I live in. I see them everyday at the grocery store, at the gas station, at the post office. It never crosses my mind. These people are devastated when attacks like Paris happen. They think it is horrific. They left their home countries to escape violence like that.

It was on the program in the OP.

It is not the truth that all muslims are evil and need to be killed and it is a horrible thing to say.
I disagree....
Well, too bad. That is hate speech and against the rules of this board. You cannot paint a billion people with one broad stroke and say they all deserve to die. That is hateful and wrong.

In 2013, the year of the Boston bombings, 3 people were killed by Muslim terrorists in the US. 5 were killed by toddlers who shot someone with a gun accidentally.

So what are you saying Lily? That all Muslims are terrorists bent on evil doings?

It sure did. The racism on this thread is disgusting and ugly and sad. What would Jesus do? Pretty sure he wouldn't condemn a billion people based on the actions of a fraction. I feel so sorry for those who can just paint a whole religion with one broad brush. Carrying around that kind of hate isn't good for you. The burden is heavier than you think.

Ahhh, I see the problem. You originally said .2%, which is what I was using, which is 2 million.

Again - there is no way it is only 200,000 Muslims. You should easily know that without the math.

LL, I am sure it is more than 1 billion muslims total, so I think you are right and the number is higher, but I am sure MM is right too--that is the number I remember.

Which? .2% or .02%? Because those are really different numbers.

I think it was .02. I remember being shocked at how low the number was, but then they were talkino about Turkey and a bunch of other countries we never think or hear about that are basically Muslim countries, and it made more sense.
I admit, I'm very leery about Muslims....have been ever since 9-1-1. While not all Muslims are terrorists, all radical terrorists who want to kill westerners for being westerners are Muslim.
It was my understanding that Turkey has a high number of Christians. And I got that from an old boyfriend who worked for the U.S. Embassy in Ankara.

.02%. My typo. I apologize.
