A high school student took to social media this week to express her outrage after witnessing other kids being denied lunch at school because they 'did not have enough money'.

Alex Melton, a 16-year-old junior at Henry County High School in Louisville, Kentucky wrote the heartfelt post on December 9 after she became angry at what she saw.

She wrote: 'If I see Henry County High School take ONE more kid's food from them because 'they don't have enough money', I'm going to flip!'

The post quickly gained 350 likes in a short space of time and caught the attention of the school district who were keen to enforce change.

Melton told WDRB: '[The cafeteria worker] told the students that if they didn't have enough money to cover their fines, then they didn't need to be in the line.

'She told them that they couldn't eat, and that they needed to put their food down. [A student] was really upset about it, and she sat her food down and she walked away, embarrassed.'

Melton's Facebook post led Henry County Schools Superintendent Tim Abrams to look into the issue.

Abrams said he would investigate whether any student was actually denied food, but branded the situation 'unacceptable' and promised it would not happen again.

MELTON'S FACEBOOK POST IN FULL

If I see Henry County High School take ONE more kids food from them because 'they don't have enough money', I'm going to flip!! Do you know if they eat at home? School lunch/breakfast may be the ONLY meal(s) they get all day!!

Do you know if their family is having financial issues? Their family may have a financial issue to where they can't afford school lunch right now, or food for their own home so they're depending on school lunch, whether their account is negative or not!!

Think before you take an action, and think of the possible things those kids are going through!! Not only is it NOT OKAY, but it isn't like the school is really losing that much money, for a $3 meal.

It isn't right to make a kid starve, much less embarrass them in front of the whole lunch room when you yank their tray right out of their hands!! What is this world coming to? Lord have Mercy!!

Source: Alex Melton's Facebook

Abrams told WDRB: 'In this case, I think we had an employee make a very poor decision and make a kid feel uncomfortable when they were going through the line. And that's unacceptable.'

According to Abrahams, there has been a long standing issue with unpaid student lunches, which add up to about $6,200.

Much of it has been impossible to recoup despite pleas to parents who owe money.

About half of the students in the district receive free or reduced lunch, WDRB reports and 'pride' might prevent more parents from applying.

He said: 'Some school districts have implemented alternative meals for students. I never want a student to feel that they're receiving a lesser lunch because of their financial situation.'

'We're not going to deny a kid food. We're gonna work with those parents and figure out a way to do this.'

Abrams told WDRB that the issue of unpaid lunches will likely be addressed with parents after the holiday season.

Elementary students in the district receive free breakfast and lunch through a community program. Middle and high school students are not currently eligible for that program.

Well, then if they are never going to deny lunch, then why pay at all?

Good grief. If you are too stupid to apply for free/reduced price lunch for your kids at school, then what do you expect?

It's not like you run out of money and they don't give you lunch. They usually even let you run a defecit and then they notify the kids, parents, etc. But, sorry kids, some of you have parents who suck at Life.

SS is on the reduced lunch program at school. He didn't have money in his account. (I hope this doesn't qualify as complaining.) They called me early this year because they said they changed their policies about feeding kids who had outstanding balances. The principal herself said last year they had parents who let their accounts run up and up for months on end without paying. Meanwhile they would be paying for the lunches and feeding the kids. THIS year you get two day to cough up money or your kid gets a cheese sandwich and a milk. That's it. I don't blame the schools one bit.

Two days might be a bit rough--but certainly a week should be plenty of time.

Shrug, it was the first week of school.  I would think parents would know that they needed to pay.  Either that or send a lunch with your kid.  I have no idea how all these VSS parents survive these days.  When I was growing up we didn't even have a cafeteria.  You, or your mom, packed your lunch every day.

Oh, and they send out notice after notice after notice when your kids account gets low. DH and I registered on the lunch site for SS so in case it happened again we could put money in his account. So now both his mom and DH get notifications periodically as to how much is in the account. They send monthly statements too. I'm sure it's all automated. I honestly don't see how parents can NOT KNOW they need to put money in it.

What other recourse does the school have?

Sometimes when you have crappy parents, the kids pay. It's just the way it is.

I completely agree NJN. Sadly, I think we are in the minority. I was posting on my local paper's website about it and got ganged up on by everyone saying it's the school's job to make sure these kids eat. It doesn't matter how easy they make it to deposit money into your kids account, or how early they start sending reminders that your account is low, or how many days they give you in the hole and keep giving your kid a breakfast/lunch, apparently they are never supposed to not feed children anything than what the cafeteria is serving. Giving them a sandwich or cereal is akin to torture and bullying and 'not fair'.

You don't. And that's the point. You cannot make some people be good parents. You can't. There are some parents that are not going to pay. All you can do is try to minimize the loss. It's sad but some kids are going to have to suffer because they have crappy parents.

It's so stupid.  They put you on free or reduced lunch at the drop of a hat.  If you are too lazy and worthless as a parent to even apply for that, then what do you expect the school to do?

The school WILL feed the dang kids that you can't afford--but you at least have to take the minimal step of applying for that program.

I'm in the minority too then.  Parents need to be responsible for their kids.  The fact that some refuse to be does not make it someone elses problem.

Husker, what you are not understanding is parents are putting their kids on reduced lunch and then not paying.

Yeah, that's BS, too--although a lot of the time the lunches are free.

If you knew ho much waste goes on in school cafeterias you would more pissed about this.

Once that student touches that tray, the food has to be discarded.

So the kid doesn't eat and the cafeteria still loses money.

Yes, parents should do the right thing and keep money in their kid's account.

But if your going to throw the food away anyway, why not just let the kid eat.

And sometimes, that could be the only food that kid gets.

Lilly. There has to be a line drawn somewhere. If you bend it here, then bend it there blah, blah. How much irresponsibility does society have to deal with? A few years ago, i wrote a check for my son to take to school. He walked out the door without for 4 days despite me reminding him. Well, then on the 5th day i got a call asking me to run up to the school and drop money off. It so happened I was off that day and i could have easily done that. But, I didn't. I had given him a check and he ignored it for 4 days. I told him Tough taters, eat when you get home.

It is not societies problem that you are an irresponsible parent. Society should not have to pick up the slack just because you don't want to. And if you can't take care of your kids that's your fault and not the rest of the world. We, as a society, shouldn't have to contribute to your laziness.

Not really everyone else's problem--especially when there are programs to ensure that they do get fed only the loser parents can't even bother to pay the minimal amount require, or sign up for FREE meals.

Ok. So let's ignore and make excuses for a religion that, at its core, has a mission to kill anyone who doesn't follow.

But instead we need to get high and mighty and draw a line over a school lunch tray.

Growing up, my parents couldn't afford the luxury of allowing me to buy lunch. Mom made us lunches every day. By the time I reached Jr. High they had a little more money, and she'd slip me a few cents to buy a bag of chips or french fries as a treat. But usually, I ate whatever she put in my bag or lunchbox.

FNW - And, you had responsible parents. That is how parents used to operate. Not anymore.

The same people who cry poor around here seem to have money for booze, tattoos, cigs and cell phones. I get sick of listening to their whining and how everyone else is supposed to subsidize them.

Those who are buying tattoos, booze and cigarettes are not buying food for their kids.

This was just a nonsense BS post directed toward me husker.  I make no excuses about terrorists.  Our country needs to do way more than they're doing.  But I can also take a stand on several other issues at the same time.

Maybe I need to be more clear on my opinion.

It isn't really that the kid has to do without a piece of cardboard called pizza.

It's more that they don't stop them BEFORE getting the food. That they wait until they have to throw it away anyway.

Those reduced and free lunch kids add up to a huge chuck of federal money for the school.

That lunch that is being taken away has already been paid for.

Yes parents should be made to take responsibility for their kids.

I'm not saying bend over backwards and be a doormat.

Gosh, depending on what you get it could be $50 to thousands of dollars.

Don't know and hopefully I'll never have to find out. But whatever it costs, it could buy a lot of food for their kids.

Most tattoos are going to run a couple of hundred bucks. Yes, elaborate arm sleeves or tattoos covering most of one's back could be a lot more, a VERY simple one could be less--but a lot of them will be right in that cost range.

 Alcohol.

It is not societies problem that you are an irresponsible parent. Society should not have to pick up the slack just because you don't want to. And if you can't take care of your kids that's your fault and not the rest of the world. We, as a society, shouldn't have to contribute to your laziness.

When I was in college, the county had a County Children's Home. About 200 kids who lived there had parents who couldn't, or wouldn't, take care of them.

It's all electronic. I have the boys' accounts set up with automatic deposit when the balance gets low.

That's how SS's is.  And you can have more than one account.  His mom has his primary account and I registered DH and I for a secondary.  That way if she forgets to put money in it he can call me and I can at least give him SOME money to eat.

Nope. I have six, and none was that expensive.

But we're talking today, not 1974 prices.
