Dear Abby - Husband is not a kid anymore but still wants to play like one

DEAR ABBY: My husband, an avid soccer player, injured himself twice last year, which left him unable to work for months at a time. He refuses to hang up his cleats because he says it's his "one true passion." I think he's being selfish because his soccer injuries have caused a financial, emotional and physical strain on our family.

I can't be the only wife/mom who doesn't want the additional risk. Any advice on how to get through to him? -- SPORTS WIFE IN CLEVELAND

DEAR SPORTS WIFE: I don't know how old your husband is, but two serious injuries in one year may be a hint from Father Time that his reflexes aren't as acute as they once were, and he should channel his passion in another direction. (Coaching, perhaps?)

Assuming you have insurance, contact your agent and ask if there is additional coverage your husband can take out in case he is seriously injured again. Of course, it won't guarantee that he won't hurt himself, but it might give you some peace of mind in case he does.

Dad had to give up demolition derbies because it was completely wrecking his body.

I don't skate anymore.

There comes comes a time in everyone's life when you just can't do certain things any longer.

This is a tough one. Generally the problem as people age is that they don't get enough exercise.

My DH had to face this reality this past year. He's now 48 and tried to play soccer like when he was in college. He hurt himself pretty badly and that make it so he couldn't cycle - which is his greater passion. So, he's giving up the soccer so he can still ride his bike.

Same thing happened with my brother.  Turned to coach soccer, I called my friend at Trek and hooked him up with a fab bike.  Better for the knees.

Wayne learned his lesson the summer he turned 31.

Head first slide into 2nd base. The base stuck. Fractured shoulder.

His V/P came into Wayne's office that Monday morning, and suggest that he was getting a little old to be playing softball.biggrin

Wayne went back to playing golf. It was safer.biggrin

Holy moly, that was almost 30 years ago!wink

DH was coaching soccer, he thought he needed to demonstrate too much stuff.  Geesh.

He'll finish up the coaching this season (without demonstrating) and then be done, unless Baby J gets into soccer, then he'll coach little kids.

My brother was a goalie. Nasty breaks. It needed to stop.

LOL! Now I have the image of that silly duck in my head!biggrin

Wayne was lucky. He's always had a desk job. He didn't miss any work.

He just had to walk around in a sling for three weeks.

And I had to help him shower and get dressed every morning.wink

LOL...good times!

Tell him to ask himself: Will i be able to get up for work the next day? If yoy cant earn an income then it isnt worth the risk anymore.
