 I just read that the director told him they would count to 3 before they dropped him and they did it on 2 instead to get an authentic reaction. It was a 25 foot drop into an air mattress made for stunts. But he was nervous about doing it so the director "tricked" him figuring it would get a better reaction. 

He was an amazing actor.
