Dear Abby: Makeup in Kindergarten?

DEAR ABBY: Our son and his wife have blessed us with a darling 6-year-old granddaughter, "Sophie," who is the love of our lives. We live nearby and are very close.

When we received her kindergarten school photo, she had on heavy lipstick and light eye shadow. My husband and I couldn't contain our shock. Her parents said they thought she looked beautiful, and Sophie was made up that way because "she wanted to." We were speechless.

When we pick her up on weekends, she sometimes wears makeup, too. It makes her look like a 30-year-old. We think that wearing it while playing dress-up is fun, but doing it outside the home takes away from her natural beauty. What are your thoughts on this? -- TAKEN ABACK IN KANSAS

http://www.uexpress.com/dearabby/2016/1/17/grandparents-cant-hide-shock-over-kindergarteners

DEAR TAKEN ABACK: Forgive me if this seems old-fashioned, but I think that a kindergartener should be allowed to remain a child for at least a few years. I'm not only surprised that your son and daughter-in-law would send their 6-year-old to school wearing makeup, I am equally surprised that the school would allow it.

And when Sophie spends the weekend with you, don't you think you should make the rules about whether she's allowed to wear makeup? Someone has to draw the line, but when you do, be prepared for some battles.

Oy! The parents have a screw loose, and so does the school, for allowing it.

I'm with the grandparents and Abby.

Make up while playing dress up at home is fine for a six year old.

Wearing it out of the house? Just no.

Seems kind of dumb but some parents are dumb. She might be going through a dress up phase, who knows? Not sure there is really much grandma and grandpa can do about it. The school pic is already done. And, if she is putting makeup on at their house, not sure I see any harm in that.

Personally, I think a small child should look like a small child.

But, is this a hill to die on? Is it worth fighting over?

If the parents allow makeup at the age of six, then they will allow dating at the age of 8. Stupid people are, well...stupid.

Stupid parents, but what can the grands do? It's really up to the parents, and unless they are endangering her life, there's not a whole heck of a lot they can do about it except to voice their disapproval. To them, not to some advice columnist.

Well. I put a little color on Caitlyn for pictures as early as a year old.

Her skin, hair and eyes were so pale, she completely washed out in puctures.

And I let her have her play make up at the age. Kindergarten.

Of course it depends on what and how much the kid wears.

And why is important.

My little granddaughter loves girly things and wants to wear makeup like mommy. My dd just uses a clean make up brush and sweep it over her face and she is happy.

It is so sad that they never found her killer. No justice for that poor little girl.

I know. At least it would have been closure.

This is bad--but the grandparents need to tread lightly or they might find themselves with no time with her and zero influence.

This is what can happen when small children never hear the word "no".

The police botched  both the crime scene  and investigation  right from the beginning.

They did--but partly because they didn't realize their main suspects were right under thei nose, leading them in directions that were unhelpful and impeding them in other ways.

Not it saying they didn't botch it, but no one suspected the parents at first.

Maybe but the parents are usually the ones they would investigate first.

Yep.  Family are always the first suspects.

If DS2 did let Itty bitty do that, I'd find a way to say something.

My kids can play with make-up. They can't wear it out of the house. Except lip gloss.

 That's a good compromise.

I had 2 boys, and didn't wear makeup.

Spoiler

DD was always into make up. The athlete with lip gloss on. She had her own set of play make up when she was 3 and she wore it all the time. Just when we thought her face was washed and ready to leave the house, she would find a stash of eye shadow in the car. We would be going to eat with friends or to play practice and I would turn around and she looked like Jon Benet. I carried baby wipes in the car for just such occasions. But she never ever wore it to school. Ever. The school would have lost it and so would I.

I will bite my lips unless I am wearing lip gloss. I still use Bonne Bell over my gloss...love the flavors!

Make-up while playing dress-up, in the privacy of a person's home? Fine.
Make-up on a kindergartner, at school, for "picture day"? Not fine.

Kids need to be kids for as long as they can be. Adulthood comes too fast already without rushing it.

Parents need to let kids be kids these days.
