Wasn't there talk on here about posters wondering how to help the stray cats around their houses?

I know we talked about building your own cat house or dog house.

That's a good, inexpensive, idea, NAOW!

We helped our neighbors, help a stray/abandoned cat, and using a similar box, on their front porch.

(We managed to feed her, and help to catch her, and get her into foster care. She is in the care of a no-kill rescue organization. Mia, will have a good home, soon.)smile

Several of us, were working on saving this poor cat. When I say "we", I mean, the neighbors on my street.

We all have rescue animals of our own. We worked together, to save this poor girl.smile

That's great that you all are working so hard to save her FWM.

I have heard of people using Rubbermaid totes, but this is cheaper and easier I would think.

Well, NAOW, the Styrofoam would provide more insulation, than a plastic tote. (I would think.) And keep the animal warmer.

If people would just spay/neuter their animals, the stray population would go down.

Big time, I think.

People make fun of us here and make jokes about our dogs having the mark of the devil but here they're extremely strict about stray dogs and cats. You must have your pets microchipped if you live in the city limits. And they have to have all their shots current. If your pet gets out and roams free and gets picked up by the pound they wait 72 hours before that pet is placed for adoption. If your pet has tags you must show up to the pound with the shot record. Also, before you can get your pet out they have to be microchipped, have shots updated, and be spayed or neutered. They're really strict about that. But we also don't have a lot of strays running around. All our shelters are full though. They're doing all they can to keep animals from being put down.

With the rubbermaid totes, I think they tell you to line them with styrofoam or similar.  My concern would be that a strong wind would blow the styrofoam cooler's away.  The tote would be heavier.

They have a bunch of these on Pinterest.

And this guy wanted to be able to see them  -

On Thanksgiving, Eric Scheel's really thoughtful dad built a "Cataquarium", a multi-level window enclosure, in order to give shelter the stray cats who were stuck outside in the freezing weather. B...:

This one puts the cooler inside a tote - which I think would be more stable.

Do you think if I build one, stray cats will come? I'd love to have a feral cat around to take care of the squirrel & chipmunks.

NAOW I was asking because I have a stray I'm feeding & it was getting cold. I ended up using a covered litter box that I lined with an old fleece pullover. It had a vent hole on top that I put packing tape over. He seems to like his box & sleeps in it every night.

Now I just need to figure out how to get it off the ground when we get almost two feet of snow in the next few days. Any suggestions Geeks?

The Styrofoam cooler is a great & cheap idea.

I saw loads of feral cats in Japan. I don't think I could walk in a neighborhood without one hissing at me. They were pretty afraid of humans.

Do you have an old Rubermaid tote you could spare, Lexxy?

Weight it down with a couple of big rocks, or bricks. And put his house on top of it.

Just an idea.

Maybe someone else will come up with something better.smile

My coworker suggested I move my patio table over by the door where the box is to shelter it.  So far that sounds like the easiest plan.

HAHAHA. Probably a joke. But who knows. Some people try to make pets out of anything.

That cracked me up. Since it said found on 75th it might be a city boy who's never seen a possum before. But one would hope he knew what a cat looked like.

I was drunk one night (no!) and coming home. Yep, cute kitty in the yard! I go running towards it. That'd be a skunk! I stopped short and took off!

LOL. The photo is hilarious.

Hope you all find a way to help the stray cats during these cold and stormy nights.
