It was at Costco not Walmart and was more of a chaise lounge than ottoman. When one goes to Costco to grab a book and read while relaxing on the couch display does one remove his shoes first?

Don't they usually have some plastic over the foot section? I mean if you go look at mattresses, there is usually a wide piece of plastic across the foot area.
People did this all the time when I worked at Target. All. The. Time. It was annoying.
What was even more annoying, was when I worked at the Gap and people (typically men) would sit on the tables. How can someone shop that table if you are sitting on it? And 90% of the time, they shoved all the piles of tshirts or whatever over so they didn't sit on them - which makes a HUGE mess. I would actually go to thst table and tell them they had to get up because the table wasn't meant to hold the weight of a grown man, just some sweaters and I wouldn't want them to get hurt. Honestly, women never sat on the displays. It was always men who just plopped down. What about a table full of jeans makes you think "good place to have a seat!" ?????

There are plenty of chairs in the hallway outside the store. I would imagine that any able bodied person who is shopping is capable of standing for a few moments while a companion tries on something. After all, those working in the store are likely standing for 8 hours or more at a time. A few minutes...shoot, I could do that half asleep.

I see no issue with sitting on furniture on display - but I wouldn't put my shoes on it.
Most of the people doing it at Target aren't trying it out to see if it's comfy. They are screwing around, spilling their Starbucks on it, changing their baby's diaper on it, etc. If they were just trying it out, no biggie. Had one guy sitting on a display reading a book while his wife shopped.

While spilling coffee and changing diapers is ridiculous, that last one wouldn't bother me.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
Who goes into a store and puts their feet on the furniture? How rude.
