A mother-of-two from North Carolina has died after being mauled by a pit bull she adopted a week ago and called ‘my big baby.’
Suzanne Story was attacked by the animal Wednesday afternoon and succumbed to her injuries just as a medical crew from Norfolk landed to take her to a hospital.
Story’s stepfather, Randy Brown, says Story adopted the dog about a week prior to the tragedy in Virginia after seeing it advertised in a newspaper.

Brown says the pit bull’s previous owners told her it was well behaved and good with young children. They gave her the pet free of charge.
‘I think they had a problem with the dog and didn't know how to handle it, and they were just trying to get rid of it, and they did,’ the woman’s stepfather told the station WVEC. ‘Found somebody that would take it, and ended up with a death.’
Mr Brown wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday that he wants the pit bull's previous owners held responsible for his stepdaughter’s death.
Story’s mother, Debbie Brown, says the attack began at around 1pm when her daughter was cleaning the dog’s crate.
Story’s sister tried to pull the pit bull off the victim and also suffered unspecified injuries.
Suzanne Story leaves behind 15-year-old and 17-year-old daughters. Her Facebook page suggests that she also had at least three other smaller dogs and two cats.
Neighbor Jonathan Nash says he saw Story walking her new pit bull a few days ago and noticed that the woman was having trouble controlling the large brown-and-white canine.
Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley says animal control officers were scheduled to euthanize the pit bull Thursday.

This is sad. It sounds like she didn't check out the previous owner well enough. Like ed said, any dog with an unknown history is dangerous.

Could have been that the dog was very territorial and the previous owners chose not to mention it. The woman was messing about in the dog's crate. and the dog didn't like it.
A very territorial dog can snap if you pick up their dishes to wash them
You have to know dogs, and know their behavior, if you're going to touch their stuff.
ESPECIALLY pits.
The father says that the lady was told something about them having problems with the dog. That should have been a sign.

I would not bring an aggressive dog into my house whether it be a pit bull or poodle. I have kids and this isn't the house for a dog that feels like it has to bite. Not happening. And I wouldn't even bring an aggressive cat into my house either. I had a cat when DH and I got married. It was a pain in the ass cat but we kept it anyway. When he became aggressive toward my SS the cat had to go.

I had a lab mix puppy. It used to nip. I had holes in all my sweatpants and socks from the damned thing nipping at me. Horrible. I came home from work one day, sick, throwing up. The dog attacked me. That was the last chance for that mutt. The ex had her put down.

BS. A beagle or a Boston terrier or a corgi or any one of a hundred or more other breeds could not have done this.
Adults actually getting killed by dogs--as opposed to just being bitten--are rare. It takes a very powerful animal to accomplish killing an able bodied human adult.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
I would never have a dog in the house that bites. Especially with kids around. LL is right. Get them young from a reputable source.

With kids in the house - I'd want to raise a dog from young puppy. That way you actually know all its history.
I agree 100% and that's why we bought our dog from a reputable breeder. The way some die hard rescuers tell it, I have committed the gravest dog sin on planet Earth. Whatever. I know the environment he was raised in and I know his entire history. That's what matters to me. This dog is regularly around 500 kids, he needs to be dependable and even tempered. People need to be smarter about choosing a pet. Rescuing is fine - in certain circumstances.

We've gotten two rescue dogs. Our DN has one from a rescue shelter. We knew the history of the dog and the rescue place. I'm not against breeders. I'm very against breeders that breed and when they can't get rid of the dogs they just turn them loose on the street. DN wanted to get a dog from a breeder. One of them wanted $5000, a home inspection, a copy of their lease agreement, six references, and to talk to her employer. She said screw that.

Well, you all think you can raise a pit bull to be safe. But, you don't know. And, why would anyone want to take a chance of having a lethal killer living with them? Yeah, your lab or chihuahua could bite. But those type of dogs do not bite and hold and bite in the aggressive and lethal ways that a pit bull can. I think it is ridiculous to own a dog like that. Just as i think it is ridiculous to own a python or a tiger or anything like that.
We got our dog for the local shelter when she was about 3 months old. She was so flipping adorable.
We went through a breeder with Hemi. They were being cited for not meeting the requirements so they were having to close down. He was two at the time. Full blood lab. We got Layla when she was about eight months old at the rescue shelter. We signed on to take Carlee from a different shelter when she was about six months old. She couldn't be released though because she still had some health issues that had to be resolved. We got her about three months later. Both of them are half lab half pit.
