Chattanooga votes to evict housing tenants who don't work

(AP) - Public Housing residents living in Chattanooga's newer, more high-end sites face eviction if they don't work, attend school or perform volunteer work for at least 30 hours a week.
The Times-Free Press reports that Chattanooga Housing Authority board members voted unanimously this week to evict residents in the Upward Mobility program if they don't keep their agreement to work. The policy begins in March.
Residents living in the city's newer public housing sites have 90 days to enroll in school, get a job, be in a job-training program or volunteer before they face eviction. As case manager will work with them and they can get a 30-day extension. Residents over age 62 are exempt.
Residents who didn't work were previously allowed to live in older public housing.

What about disabled people? And do they count looking for work?

Ages ago, when I lived in government housing the majority of them were elderly people. I realize that is not the case in every housing place but the one I lived this wouldn't really have had an effect on.

And it's going to keep the riff raff out. (The bad behavior, not the person)
This is being implemented at the newest development.

I don't know of anyone who didn't work at my apartment complex except for me, the elderly, and the disabled. Everyone else worked and just made small wages. Most of them were minimum wage workers.

Yes you do. I just looked it up. You have some Hud Mortgaged places and more. Maybe they just aren't near you. Not sure how spread out geographically your town/city is.

Hud mortgages are not public housing. It's just a government insured loan. The people have to pay it or get foreclosed on.
But I looked it up, too - and they most certainly have public housing in her area, including a public housing authority.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
We don't have any apartments near us. I believe there MIGHT be some way downtown. But not near me. I don't know anything about HUD mortgages. I'm sure they exist around here. We do have a housing authority. I know where it is and have been there. They work mainly with the disabled.

But you DO have public housing?

Well I don't really know why it would matter cause the article is about Chattanooga. Not Texas.
As for government housing, a lot of it now is more like track housing.
So it can be a nice looking neighborhood.

We have some kind of facilities here. I don't know what they are like. They are given to the mentally ill mostly. I'm sure we have some HUD homes. I know where I used to live there were five different apartment complexes that were all government based plus a whole subdivision that was HUD homes. I know that they have some facilities that are government funded but like I said they are given to the disabled and mentally ill. So not sure if we're comparing the same thing. I would guess that it's still the same type of funding but if it's filled with people who can't work then these rules wouldn't apply. Does that make sense?

Well, it doesn't really matter but I was trying to relate it to my state. And where I used to live had those nice neighborhoods but not here. Although there is one block that Habitat for Humanity worked on. The houses are pretty.

You misunderstand. Developers will get a HUD mortgage to build a large complex and the agreement is they have to put 40% or so aside for low income housing. It saves the town/City from having to build their own.

Ah. I was thinking FHA loans.

I think it's a great idea. if you want "free" housing you should have to work for it (assuming you are able to, of course). I have to work for my home, why shouldn't other people?
