It's not healthy to have a waist over 35" ': Veteran Sports Illustrated star Cheryl Tiegs, 68, labels size 14 Ashley Graham 'unhealthy'

  • The 68-year-old said she doesn't think the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue should feature 'fulled figured' women because 'it is glamorizing them'
  • Cheryl said Ashley has a 'beautiful face', but she insisted that it is not 'healthy' to have a waist that is 35 inches or larger
  • However, according to Ford Models, Ashley, who is frequently pictured working out, only has a 29.5 inch waist
  • The size 14 model made history by becoming the first woman of her size to be featured on the cover of the iconic issue

Former Sports Illustrated model Cheryl Tiegs has slammed Ashley's Graham history-making cover, claiming that the magazine is promoting figures that are unhealthy.

The 68-year-old, who is best known for her sexy Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue editorials, boldly stated that full-figured models aren't healthy because waist circumference shouldn't be larger than 35 inches - but according to Ford Models, Ashley's stomach is only 29.5 inches.

'I don't like that we are talking about full-figured women because it's glamorizing them, and your waist should be smaller than 35 [inches] she told E! News. 'That is what Dr. Oz said and I am sticking to it.'

'No, I don't think it's healthy,' she continued. 'Her face is beautiful, but I don't think it is healthy in the long run.'

Ashley, who wears a size 14, made Sports Illustrated Swimsuit history by becoming the first woman of her size to cover the iconic issue.

Ironically, Ashley just spoke candidly about the importance of encouraging women to be the healthiest version of themselves - no matter what their size - during her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday.

'I am not a promoter of anorexia. I am not a promoter of obesity,' the 28-year-old said. 'I think we have to promote women to be healthy at every size as long as they are getting off of the couch and moving their body.'

Why is it we are fine with chihuahuas and bulldogs and dachsunds but expect, one size people?

Sheryl Tiggs is well past her prime, she's jealous. And so judgmental!

Teach women to be proud of themselves instead of reinforcing feelings of inadequacy. Gosh.

My waist is still bigger than 35", but it's 10" less than it was a year ago.

This.  I saw this story two days ago and thought about posting it myself.  Cheryl is old, not attractive, and dried up.  She's mad because her day is over and they allowed a not bone thin lady to grace the magazine cover.  Get over it Cheryl.  Get over yourself.  It is what it is.

I have heard that people who carry the weight in their waists are more likely to have heart problems. Perhaps that was what she was trying to convey. But she came off as being a bit judgmental.

It actually is unhealthy to have a waist over 35 inches. But she didn't need to come out and say it directed at someone. Geesh.

What!!  For some reason I always picture you as a slender woman, Lily, with lots of energy.     Not that you can't be over 35" and still have energy.   LOL

Might be kind of fun to have a thread on how we picture other geeks on the board....

As women age, it's actually better to be a bit over weight. You have better outcomes after surgery and better prognosis for recovery after extended illnesses if you are a bit heavier. Thinner older women struggle to recover more than bigger women. Not obese, but bigger. So Cherly needs to shut up and have a cheeseburger and some fries.

I don't know if this is statistically true or not BUT from my experience working in geriatric care I would say that is true.  It is a fact that as you age you lose taste buds.  That's why many elderly people have a loss of appetite.  Whenever an older person goes through surgery they usually lose weight.  If you're a 150 pound woman and lose 20 pounds you'll be fine.  If you're a 98 pound woman and lose 20 pounds you're in big trouble.

Yep. I can't remember where I read it now, and I can't find it, but that is exactly what the article said. Older women especially who were a bit heavier had an easier recovery if they weighted a bit more than average. The older woman who was thin struggled to recover her strength. Makes sense that losing 10 - 20 lbs is life threatening if you only weigh 95 lbs to begin with.

If you go from 98 to 78 pounds you are termed malnourished. They immediately start talking feeding tubes, supplements, and such. They don't even give them time to recover. But then again when you only weigh 78 pounds you're usually dehydrated and your skin is paper thin and tears like a kleenex.

My former MIL, miserable old crone, was always really thin. When she got cancer and started losing weight, she was done for.

When she died, she barely weighed 60 pounds. She was literally skin, bones and organs.
