St. Louis archbishop questions ties to Girl Scouts group

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Girl-Scouts-cookies-Archbishop-St-Louis-Catholic-6854543.php

The Archbishop of St. Louis is picking a fight with an unlikely enemy: the Girl Scouts.

In a letter to local priests, scout leaders and parishioners, Archbishop Robert Carlson suggested that parishes should determine whether the Girl Scouts are an organization that they want to continue to support. The Catholic Church and the local St. Louis-area Girl Scouts have been in partnership for close to a century, Fox 2 reported, but their moral values now differ.

In his letter, Carlson stated that the group's support of the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender people is in opposition to church teachings. The letter asked parishes to consider whether the Girl Scouts is concerned with forming "spiritual" Catholic girls (emphasis theirs):

"Girl Scouts is exhibiting a troubling pattern of behavior and it is clear to me that as they move in the ways of the world it is becoming increasingly incompatible with our Catholic values. We must stop and ask ourselves — is Girl Scouts concerned with the total well-being of our young women? Does it do a good job forming the spiritual, emotional, and personal well-being of Catholic girls?"

Carlson also wrote that the group's parent organization, World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, promote "contraception and 'abortion rights' on behalf of its girl members, the majority of whom are minors" the letter went on to say.

But wait, there's more (emphasis ours): Girl Scouts resources and social media "highlight and promote role models in conflict with Catholic values, such as Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan."

The letter suggested that parents look into alternative groups for their daughters — perhaps something more church-based.

A spokeswoman for Girl Scouts USA told the Huffington Post that the teachings of their group do not go against Catholic principles, and that they do not take a stance on abortion of contraception.

"As the preeminent leadership development organization for girls of every faith and background, we remain committed to building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place," the spokeswoman said in a statement to the site.

As for promoting Steinem and Friedan on social media? Well, they sidestepped that argument and stated, "Girl Scouts is a non-political, non-partisan organization."

There are 43,000 girls in the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri chapter, the New York Times reported, with more than 4,000 of them "in troops based in Catholic schools and parishes." Should individual churches decide not to support those Girl Scout troops, they will need to find new places to hold their meetings.

Lest you think you're off the hook, Boy Scouts — the church is closely watching you, too. Carlson stated that while Boy Scouts of America offers "protections" to religious groups, "I continue to wonder in which direction this once trusted organization is now headed."

But, most importantly: can St. Louis parishioners still buy Girl Scout Cookies?

Luckily, the Archdiocese of St. Louis thought ahead and have already addressed that question on their FAQ sheet about the Girl Scout controversy. The church's stance is to "act in your accord with (your) conscience," so you're on your own with that decision.

Girl Scouts lost my support a while ago. All of this, PLUS the money grubbing. As a leader who went to leader meetings, all they ever talked about was money. And they use the girls to sell their cookies and they give them less and less of the take.

Are Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts supposed to be Catholic organizations?

Yep, I lost my zeal for the GS as the money thing became more and more up front.

Girl Scouts lost my support when they changed to a cheaper recipe for their cookies (and made them end up tasting like cardboard) but still charged the same per box.

No, but both were founded with faith in God as part of their teachings.  Both the girl scout promise and the boy scout law contain a promise to serve God.

And the bigger issue is that many churches allow the scouts to use their facilities for free.  I can't blame any church from removing that benefit when the girl scout movement has made it clear that they are no longer adhering to Godly principles.

They can try to get free facilities elsewhere.

Of course, when I was a girl scout, they didn't partner up with Planned Parenthood, and they didn't teach us about sex and our right to an abortion.

They had other things to focus on, like building character, teaching leadership, learning about girls around the world, and helping your community and the world.

Yep.  Sometimes you can find a troop that ignores the wants of the organization and just focuses on character, new skills, etc.  But they can not escape the constant fundraising.  Very sad.

I actually like most of the cookies.  And yes they are pricey as are any other fundraiser so the price doesn't bother me.  What does bother me is how little goes to the scout's troop.

Ex relationship was a boy scout leader for years. He was offered a job in the administration part of scouts. The pay was about $250,000 a year. It's a business that uses children to make them money.

DD was a Girl Scout from kindergarten through 9th grade. I never saw nor heard anything about sex or abortion of any of that. Not one peep. And I was involved and helped out all the time. I even had a leader's guide - never saw anything in there about it either. The only thing I ever saw was "it's your body, don't let anyone pressure you to do something you don't want to do" type of message and it was that brief. When people talk about Girl Scouts and abortion and such, I just don't see it.

I was also upset about how much money grubbing there was. It was all about how much your troop could raise for the council. Our council had a huge building with multiple floors and offices. More adults working there than I thought would be needed for a while state worth of Girl Scouts.

I was a brownie. For maybe a year. I did more outside activities with my family than the scouts. They really didn't have much to offer or teach me I wasn't already learning at home. DH is an eagle scout. His father was into it. I'm not sure what it taught him unless it was to be a gentleman, which he is.

I hated Scouting.

And it doesn't matter if it is a Catholic organization or not.

Many a partnership have divided when values became at odds.

I started as a Brownie and stayed in it until I was 18. We did tons of fund raisers but we also used most of that money to go do GS related things. I liked it.

GS leadership has gone very PC. Why would the Church want to support that?

The diocese in Indiana where we lived was a HUGE pro-GirlScout diocese. In fact, they were not thrilled about me being a co-leader because I wasn't Catholic. Almost caused a big issue - the Girl Scout office stepped in and told the church to knock it off.

Scouts Canada membership was down 73%. In order to attract new members, they had to change.
Now we have Sikh chapters, Tamil chapters, Jewish chapters, etc., in 19 different languages, from Tagalog to Estonian to Farsi.

I think that's awesome. I hope they do some inter-troop activities in order to expose other girls to different troops and ways. That would be so educational and fun!

My bro is an Eagle scout, it was one of the deciding factors into him getting a ROTC scholarship to Cornell.  My father was his scout leader.  A lot of the boys in the troop became Eagles.  It really is the Troop Leader and volunteers that make it happen.

When asked if you want to buy GS cookies, ask them how many GS did it take to make them.

I don't like them much anymore.

They had a lemon cookie that was good but I don't think they have them now.

Well, that would defeat the purpose of The Girl Scouts here...its pretty much a religious organization.

Nobody is betraying their morals. It still teaches good values, like helping your fellow man and being a productive member of your community. We have a massive immigrant population here.

Scouts can become inclusive or disappear.

It doesn't say a Christian God though. When I see "God" I see it as "whichever God you believe in", not "there is only one true God and I expect that you know which one I'm talking about"

That may be true where you are. However here, almost all GS meetings are in churches and they make it quite clear...

Yeah...I am talking about the US too. Our GS troop had meetings in a church but was pretty secular. The church was just the meeting place, not the troop leader! The meaning of God was never spelled out either explicitly or implicitly. It was actually understood that not everyone believed in the same God, so when each girl said God, it was personal to her, and not reflective of anyone else's beliefs but hers.

And yeah, that was in the US. So carry on.

The other troop we were in had nothing ever about religion either. But preferred that you were a member of the church if you were going to be a co-leader. They almost demanded it. But the council told them they couldnt do that and the church backed down.

The churches don't do anything other than provide a meeting place occasionally. We met at the library, the mall, all kinds of places...

Here, the churches are directly involved with the troops. And they require that leaders be members. Its definitely a Christian organization here...

Over 22% of our citizens are foreign-born. More than one in five.

They are most welcome to come to church and join the girl scouts. But they shouldn't expect an organization to cater to their whims...

We have several troops that meet in our library. Thursday nights are the worst. The leaders always bring sugary snacks & the girls run wild after the meeting. We finally spoke to them about their behavior.
