'See you Sunday': Chris Rock teases 'blackout' for Oscars
Permalink

On Thursday, Steve Harvey used his platform on his eponymous morning program, calling for Oscar host Chris Rock to be “bigger and blacker” and to represent for the score of black entertainers who would not be in attendance.

Early Friday, Rock took to Twitter and gave Harvey the equivalent of The Nod. “See you Sunday,” the comedian tweeted along with the hashtags, #blackout and #oscars, and a video of television static.

Rock initially told The Hollywood Reporter in December that he wanted to host the 88th annual Academy Awards because "it just seemed like a good time." Tyrese later implored the comedian to step down from the show following the shutout of actors of color from the major acting categories and the renewed outcry behind the #OscarsSoWhite trend.

While Rock did not publicly respond to the call, producers shared he was rewriting his monologue to address the issue. Rock also released promos that took subtle jabs atRidley Scott’s The Martian and the "White BET Awards."

I really don't understand all this hoopla. Is Hollywood really that racist that they don't honor people due to their skin color? Or do others want affirmative action when it comes to awards, i.e. giving someone an award because they have a different skin color but were not the "best" actor?

You know, I wanted to watch it...but after about 30 seconds of Chris Rock and all his racist comments, I watched one of my recorded shows instead.

I haven't watched any of the awards shows in years.

But this has to be the most screwed up crap ever.

It's a can't win situation no matter what.

If none of the performances by black actors were good enough to be nominated, well that's on them.

Fight for better parts. Perform better.

And didn't 12 Years a Slave pretty much dominate the awards last year?

I didn't watch. A lot of phony drama created by millionaire crybabies. No thanks. Did Leo win? That was the only thing i was interested in.

I don't watch award shows in general. I just googled Denzel Washington & Morgan Freeman. Both have a whole bunch of Tonys, Academy Awards, Golden Globes but neither won an Oscar. Maybe there is something going on with the Oscars. I don't really know or much care it just seems a little strange.

Well...from someone that works in the industry it is super white. Its changing, but slowly. The biggest problem that I see is that Hollywood will still recast characters as white when they were written as a different race.

Example - The Mortal Instruments - the side kick was Asian in the books. Both the movie and TV show have him as white. This is a minor character so I have no idea why they couldn't find someone who fit the description.

There were no outstanding performances by black actors this year.  There just weren't.  It looks to me like the black people are saying that there should be black nominees,  whether the nomination was deserved or not.  Seems kind of counterintuitive to me.  They WANT to be rewarded for their skin color.  Oh, racism is definitely alive...and it's not the white people...

Oh.  As I said I'm not much for watching award shows.  But if that is the case then they both have won at least one.  I realize they are only 2 black men among a lot of white ones, but they were the first ones to come to mind as great actors.

It was the same last year.

12 years a Slave was 2014.  I think it received three, I am not sure how many nominations.

Part of the issue is that very few roles are offered up to Non Whites, and Straight Out of Compton was shut out. I don't think they are being racist, I think they are asking for Hollywood to be more diverse and actually represent the makeup of the U.S.

More roles should be open to all different colors, not just the same actors over and over again.

Well, as much as I like Straight Outta Compton, it DEFINITELY was NOT award worthy.  The acting was horrible.  It should have been shut out.

And Hollywood does what all businesses do.  They make movies that make money.  They shouldn't just make a movie because it has some black characters.

True, but they could start by not changing the race of characters to white.

I actually liked Straight Out of Compton, but i can see why some people don't agree.

There are black movies. BET has them everyday.

But most are just not good.

The ones that are, get noticed.

As for black rolls, there are more of them now than there once was.

But AA was never a good idea. And if you nominate just because of the color of skin, that's wrong.

Oh, they do that all the time.  They change black to white, white to black.  It happens...more often that you think.  Shawshank Redemption, nominated for best picture AND Best Actor in a Leading Role...In the book, Morgan Freeman's character, Red, was a red headed Irish guy...

Here is a decent list of some whitewashing for those that are interested:

21 The film about card counting features white actors Jim Sturgess, Jacob Pitts, and Kevin Spacey in the lead roles. The film is based on the true story where a group of Asian-American students and their teacher applied card counting to win significantly in gambling.

30 Days of Night - In the vampire horror film, white actor Josh Hartnett plays Sheriff Eben Oleson in an Alaskan town. The originating comic book mini-series featured the character as Sheriff Eben Olemaun, who is of Inuit descent.

Aloha - The romantic comedy-drama features an all-white cast and is set in the state of Hawaii, which is over 70% nonwhite. One of the actors, Emma Stone, portrayed the character Allison Ng; the character is stated as having a father of halfChinese and half Native Hawaiian descent, and a mother of Swedish descent.

Apache - In the Western film, white actor Burt Lancaster stars as an Apache warrior

Argo - In the political thriller film based on a true story, white actor Ben Affleck plays Tony Mendez, a CIA technical operations officer who is of half Mexican descent.[12][13][18] Tony Mendez himself said he did not think of himself as Hispanic.

A Beautiful Mind - In the biographical film about John Nash, white actor Jennifer Connelly plays Nash's wife Alicia, who was born in El Salvador.

The List just goes on and on...

So where do you get these actors?

Is there an abundance of inuit actors? Asian/Hawaiian actors?

And are they any good?

The issue is they are not even offered a chance to audition.  If you read the casting calls they don't get the chance.  I think the best actor should get a role, but they should be given a chance to audition.

If a part is written for a middle age, over weight, white man, then that's what the role calls for.  Will Smith needs not show up...

Seriously, I have never heard one person say that.  Ever.  My daughter used a line from the movie as he Senior quote.  My mother watches it when it is on.  Even G, (who SWORE he would never watch it) liked it when I made him watch it.   What about it didn't you like?

But yeah, they did put black people in white rolls.

From the few clips I've seen, I have no desire to watch it...so I guess my answer would be: the vibe, the setting & the actors.

I loved the original Grease when I was a kid. I saw it in the theater maybe a dozen times. I recorded the new live version but got through maybe 45 minutes. I saved it on my DVR for a bit & then deleted it to make space for other stuff.

It was supposed to take place in the 1950's.  Segregation was still a thing.  There were maybe one or two, if any, blacks in white schools.  Like it or not, this was our country's history.  To include them as main roles was another attempt to erase history and took away from the authenticity of the original show, and original period, IMO.    Yeah, yeah, they were trying to modernize it.  Then don't have it take place in the 1950's.  Use today's hairstyles and fashion.  Change the music.    While the remake was entertaining, it wasn't Grease.  That's what I had a problem with.  I did think Julianne was a cute Sandy and that girl who played Rizzo did a great job, especially considering.  Since DH forgot to record it, I only saw bits and pieces, however.

Now you have heard two people say it. I can't stand Grease the play nor can I stand Grease the movie. I hate the songs and the plot and pretty much everything about it. I have always hated it. I was the only girl in show choir who groaned when we found out we were doing Grease for our spring musical in high school. Sorry. No offense to those who like it. It just triggers my gag reflex.
