So, my adorable, sweet Sheba will be 15 next month.  I can't believe it!  I remember so distinctly getting her from the pound when she was only 3 months old.

She is a golden retriever mix, pretty much no doubt about that, but what she is mixed with is a mystery.  The pound said collie, the lady at the vet said weimeraner, and recently we saw an English Shepherd with a face almost identical to hers.  I was talking to a lady that does a herding dog rescue and she looked at a picture of Sheba and said she could be part Irish Setter.

Since she is absolutely the best, most sweetest dog ever to grace the planet, I want to know what she is so that we know what we are looking for in our next dog.

So, I bought a doggie DNA kit and sent it in on Saturday.  It should take 2-3 weeks to get our results with a certificate telling us the breeds back to her great-grandparents.

Has anyone else done this?

Oh - and the lady made me sad b/c when I told her how old Sheba was, her eyes got all sad and she asked me if I was prepared for the end.  Uhhhhh......NO.  No, I will never be prepared for the end, lady.

FWM did it and found out some cool things about her dog. I would love to do it. They told us Layla was part pit and part lab. She looks it. We were also told that Carlee is part pit and part lab. We don't think so though. She looks very much like she has boxer in her. When we look at boxer pictures she looks almost identical except for her face looks lab.

I know breeds are prone to certain behavior, but I really don't think every dog is alike or replaceable.

I don't want to replace her.  She is absolutely irreplaceable.   But I would like a dog with a similar temperament.

She is beautiful LL. I'd get setter or maybe pointer. Her face looks narrower that a true GR.

Thank you.  She is so sweet.  I've started walking more and I try taking her with me, but she can't handle long walks, anymore.

Her face is narrower, which is where the question arises.  She's very smart, though, so I'm not sure it's Irish Setter (sweet dogs, but dumb as rocks).  Although, I have questioned her intelligence lately.  She KNOWS she needs a rug to get up off the hardwood floors these days because her back legs don't work so well, anymore.  I have bought more and more rugs to cover the floor for her, and she keeps laying as far away from them as possible and then can't get up.  She knows to drag her self over to a rug, so she should know to lay down at least next to one, even if she wants the cool floor.

Poor sweet thing.  When my dog got older he needed help getting up too.  It is so heartbreaking.

We had an Irish Setter when I was a kid.  She was super hyperactive.  I think that is part of the breed.  Plus she would probably have a darker reddish gold coat.  She could Have English setter too.

Got the results today.

She is mostly golden retriever. Out of her 8 great-grandparents, 5 were golden retrievers, 1 was a Jindo, 1 was a Labrador Retriever, and 1 was a Wiemeraner.

Her grandparents were: On one side - a purebred golden and a golden/jindo cross. On the other side - a purebred golden and a lab/wiemeraner cross.

Parents: One was 3/4 Golden and 1/4 Jindo, and the other was 1/2 Golden, 1/4 lab, 1/4 weimeraner

That makes Sheba 5/8 Golden, 1/8 Jindo, 1/8 lab, and 1/8 weimeraner.

Lucky timing.  It's on sale for $70.  Order the test, do the cheek swab and send it in.
