A family who have been fighting to keep their daughter alive on life support after she was declared brain dead two years ago insist she is 'as healthy and beautiful as ever'.

Jahi McMath's parents shared a new photo of their 15-year-old daughter on Friday, their first update in three months after winning an injunction to keep their daughter alive.

Jahi from Oakland, California, was undergoing routine surgery when she suffered a cardiac arrest and was placed on life support.

Three doctors then agreed she was legally dead and applied to turn off her life support machine.

But her family refused to accept the prognosis and eventually won an injunction preventing the hospital from switching off the ventilator, and transferred the teen to an undisclosed facility in New Jersey willing to keep her alive.

Her mother Nailah Winkfield, has regularly posted pictures on Facebook showing her daughter's condition.

And in the first public update in over three months, today Mrs Winkfield posted a picture of her daughter saying she is constantly changing.

She wrote underneath the image: 'Jahi as healthy and beautiful as ever, proving the naysayers wrong.

'A fighter, a warrior, a blessed child, Gods got your back little girl, keep fighting.' (sic).

Jahi received a kiss from her sister in February last year. The family made headlines for months when her family refused to allow her life support systems to be removed, despite medical declarations that the teenager was brain dead

She also thanked everybody who had supported her campaign as she tries to get Jahi moved to another medical facility.

She added: 'Your testimony will be a great one. Prayers going up from many, all the prayers, good wishes combined with your mothers love for you which is pure and soothing will definitely keep you going. Stay blessed everyone and thank you for your prayers and love.'

Jahi's case attracted national attention when doctors fought her family in court in a bid to remove her life support.

The family claims that 15-year-old McMath is responding to her mother's commands, and that she does so in increasing amounts

The family's attorney, Chris Dolan, argued in court papers filed in 2014 that the teenager was no longer brain dead and showed significant signs of life.

They maintain she is still alive despite medical opinion to the contrary.

Mr Dolan has acknowledged that a recovery from brain death would be a medical first however he insists, along with the family, that brain scans show electrical activity and that she responds to verbal commands from her mother.

In the highly-publicized case of 13-year old Jahi McMath, who was declared brain dead after complications from tonsil and sinus surgery, we see a prime example of a family who isn’t letting go of hope for their daughter’s recovery, even though they are being scrutinized for their decision to keep her on life support.

Her mother, Nailah Winkfield was quoted saying, “I would probably need for my child’s heart to stop to show me that she was dead. Her heart is still beating, so there’s still life there.” The idea of a body with a beating heart actually being labeled as “dead” is a concept that simply can’t be grasped by some. Jahi has been issued a death certificate already, but her mother says she’s still “sleeping.”

I feel so bad for all the family. The girl will never recover consciousness, yet they (the family) can not let go.

I don't think I could do that to my child, but I am not them.

She obviously isn't dead. She's in a vegetative state.

Wait...they're suing for wrongful death AND claiming she's still alive? How does that work?

Which brings us back to the Oakland courtroom where Judge Freedman was hearing Jahi and her family's personal injury claim against Dr. Frederick Rosen, who performed her surgery, and the hospital. They are suing for personal injuries, negligent infliction of emotional distress, wrongful death and breach of care

So if they can get her declared legally alive, they can sue for millions. If the court says she is legally dead, their award is capped at $250,000. I would hate to think that's their reason for doing this, but it could be a factor.

Very sad. I'm not sure I could do this, but I'm not sure I can pull the plug either. It would be a difficult decision. But I sure as hell wouldn't put hearts on her eyes and decorate her up and post pics. There is something sick about that, to me.

A lot of times the eyes are covered to protect them or to moisturize them.

I have conflicting feeling on this.

I can't imagine what it is like to be in this situation.

Clearly, they all need prayer.

I have worked with patients like her. Many of them. We never ever covered their eyes. On a few occasions we put drops in their eyes to moisture them but that was rare too.

Machines can't keep dead alive. They can preserve what is left until she ultimately dies. But a machine cannot sustain you when all of your life functions have ceased.

I don't think it's creepy.

I think it's a really sad situation and anyone who has not been in that exact situation couldn't possibly know what they would do or how they would act.

It's a mom trying to cope.

I could not keep my child like this. To me it's just cruel. She is nothing more than a body being kept alive by machines. Hanging on doesn't allow you the ability to cope. It gives you false hope and dreams. When you begin to let go you start coping with reality and begin to heal and move on.

Putting makeup on her dead daughter is so very wrong.

If you LOVE your child, let her go.

It must be very hard, to give up on a child, that you have loved for years.

I think that must be why, this Mom refuses to give up, and let her child go.

It's so very sad.cry

I couldn't stand to see one of my children in that condition.

I'd rather they be in heaven.

But, that's my opinion.

I feel terrible for the Mom/family.

And, I feel terrible for Jahi.crycrycry

I think there is a difference between prolonging life and prolonging death. You may have enough brain function to carry out some basic functions but nothing beyond that. I don't support active euthanasia. However, there is nothing wrong with allowing nature to take it's course either.
