NFL Threatens to Deprive Atlanta of Hosting Super Bowl Over Religious Liberty Bill

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank’s dream of hosting numerous Super Bowls in the team’s new Mercedes-Benz Stadium to open in 2017 may turn into a nightmare if Georgia House Bill 757 becomes law.

Known as the “religious liberty law,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the bill protects “social, educational or charitable services that violate such faith-based organization’s sincerely held religious belief.” The bill, already passed by state lawmakers, needs a signature from Republican Governor Nathan Deal to become law in the Peach State.

Friday the NFL issued a statement from spokesman Brian McCarthy that the proposed law runs contrary to the league’s values of “tolerance” and “inclusivity.” The full statement reads as follows:

NFL policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness, and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other improper standard. Whether the laws and regulations of a state and local community are consistent with these policies would be one of many factors NFL owners may use to evaluate potential Super Bowl host sites.

The NFL demonstrated in 1992 that they will change venues on principle, when the league moved the Super Bowl to the Rose Bowl in California from Arizona because the state did not recognize MLK day.

Esquire, which refers to the legislation as an “anti-gay bill,” reported that the Falcons owner Blank agrees with the NFL’s statement and that “it’s nice to see the NFL standing on the right side of history—on this issue at least.” He continued by saying that House Bill 757 “would have long-lasting negative impact on our state and the people of Georgia.

I didn't realize liberals controlled the NFL. Where do I go to take part in the liberal NFL conspiracy? Actually, I would be happy if the Cleveland Browns could scrape together a decent season. But if that doesn't pan out, I always have religious liberties to take away I guess. Lol.

Backlash should be expected when you try and legislate acceptable discrimination.

Churches and religious organizations (and the people employed or volunteering there) are already exempted from doing things that go against their tenets and cannon. Laws like this serve no purpose other than to try and expand discrimination into the public sector.

What doesn't seem to be understood is this law would protect faith based organizations, like churches, from discrimination.

You don't fully grasp how important this is.

That exemption you speak of is being tested every single day.

The NFL has bigger problems than what someone is doing in a church or at a charity drive.

It is not an anti-gay bill. It's a religious protection bill. It protects against forced servitude at events that are against the person's religion. NO ONE should be forced to bake a cake to celebrate a union against their religion. NO ONE. Go get your cake elsewhere.

More states are going to try to do the same thing, protect religious rights, so what will the NFL do when most of the states that host major football teams, enact the religious protection rights? Humm?

I guess they could hold the Super Bowl in Canada every year. rofl.gif

 LOL!

We still have California.  Maybe they should just build a permanent Super Bowl stadium there and be done with it.  At least until California falls into the ocean.  biggrin

Did you read the actual proposed law or just the OP or the link in the OP?

The law, as proposed, does more than just protect faith based organizations. It also legitimizes discrimination in the public sector and protects those that wish to discriminate.

The way it's written would even allow discrimination against women, against people of other races, even against other religions. I take no issue with religion based discrimination on religious property or in religious institutions, but I don't feel it's right to discriminate in the public sphere.

I came across this today:

Georgia Guts Religious Freedom Bill
www.cnsnews.com/commentary/ryan-t-anderson/georgia-guts-religious-freedom-bill

Simply put, it looks like they pared it back so it basically covers what's already covered by Separation of Church and State.

Yep. He said this isn't an issue in Georgia that requires a specific law, we welcome all and enjoy religious freedom without the bill. So, basically, he used the excuse that we haven't had one of those ridiculous lawsuits. I don't really care, they watered it down to almost nothing, anyway. We'll just have to rely on on court system to enforce freedom of religion in the proper manner.

So, got some scuttlebutt on how this went down.

The House passed a very limited religious liberty bill aimed at protecting houses of worship, ministers, religious organizations, and then sent it up to the Senate, which added a bunch of stuff. So, it went back down to the House, where it was said the House "gutted" it (really, they put it back the way they had it), and the governor vetoed it b/c it was a mess.

The thing that stood out is the protecting houses of worship, clergy and religious organizations.

Yes. We have religious freedom and we think that will be enough.

But it wont.

What are we going to do when a homosexual couple wants to use one of the beautiful sanctuaries to get married and are refused?

We need this distinction to protect religious freedom.

The "anti-LGBT bill" just passed in North Carolina. Companies ARE pulling out....cancelling production and going elsewhere.

Conferences have been moved to other states.

A few years ago, Tennesseans voted on gay marriage. 86% voted no.
There were threats of boycotts and moving companies then. Never happened. In fact, Nissan North America moved its headquarters here about 3 years ago and Mars also. Its booming here. I actually wish it would slow down a bit...

A production coordinator for Lionsgate told the Associated Press that the company is canceling plans to shoot a comedy show in Charlotte and will instead film in Canada.

Turner Broadcasting and 20th Century Fox have also said they will reevaluate  future production if the bill is not repealed.

And blah blah blah. They will reevaluate. Um hmm...we'll see.

The Canadian dollar is so weak right now, actors and musicians are just turning down the work there. G has declined 3 shows because of the weakness of the dollar and the high taxes taken right off the top...

 Looks like you're wrong.

CALGARY — The loonie fell below the 70-cent U.S. mark Tuesday for the first time in 13 years. In its wake, the rapidly dropping dollar is leaving a roster of winners and losers in Canada. Here’s a look at who is benefiting — and who is hurting:

Winner: The film industry. Hollywood North, whether it be Vancouver, Toronto, or some of the up-and-coming markets like Calgary, is booming. Peter Leitch, president of North Shore Studios and chairman of the Motion Picture Production Industry Association of B.C., says American studios are increasingly heading to Canada to take advantage of the low dollar.

“That does make Canada one of the top choices of places to come to,” said Leitch. “A few years ago when it was at par, it was quite a challenge to attract business.”

He said the boost to the film industry is helping fill some of the gaps from the resource sector.

“It’s a great alternative when other parts of the economy are struggling. I mean, we’re hiring people from the oil and gas industry to help rig some of our sets.”

Low Canadian dollar helping film industry, manufacturing in B.C.

'We're just licking our chops,' says film agent as B.C. industry profits from low Canadian dollar

The Canadian dollar's fall to its lowest level in 12 years is bad news for cross-border shoppers and anyone travelling to the U.S., but B.C's film industry and some manufacturers are seeing a boost with bargain-seeking Americans.

"It's been extremely busy for the past year and a half, and it's going to get busier because of the dollar," said Eric Edwards, an agent and manager at Lucas Talent.

"While the rest of the country is cringing, people in the film industry, we're just licking our chops."

www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/canadian-dollar-film-manufacturing-bc-1.3392704

Do you have ANY idea how many American movies and TV shows are filmed in Canada, even before the dollar fell?

Even Supernatural in filmed here.

Supernatural is filmed in Vancouver, along with several other shows.

I doubt very seriously it has as much to do with political correctness as you think.

It5's a gold mine for TV and movies right now. It was always cheaper to film here, but now US filming is soaring.

I was getting really tired of seeing those film trucks, trailers and canteens everywhere, taking up parking spaces and pretending they're filming in Europe.

It's reached absurd proportions now with the low loonie.

G can play here or not....doesn't matter to us. There's money to be made hand over fist.

Looks like there are real economic consequences.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) might claim that he hasn’t heard directly from any companies planning to leave his state over the harsh new anti-LGBT law (HB2) that sailed through the legislature in just one day last week. But just a week later, very real economic consequences are already starting to pile up.

Some 100 national companies have signed onto a letter first distributed earlier this week decrying the law. They join the several businesses that had already spoken out against it in the days immediately after it passed. Wells Fargo added to the symbolic stand on Thursday by lighting the 48-story Duke Energy Center in pink, white, and blue to celebrate International Day of Transgender Visibility.

Likewise, several cities and states and have banned all government-funded travel to the state of North Carolina. On Friday, District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) added D.C. to a growing list, which includes San Francisco, New York City, Seattle, and Portland, as well as the states of New York, Vermont, Connecticut, and Washington.

These largely symbolic actions are increasingly being buttressed by measurable economic consequences. Braeburn Pharmaceuticals was planning to build a $20 million manufacturing and research facility in Durham County, but it announced this week that it is “reevaluating our options based on the recent, unjust legislation.

Theatre composer Stephen Schwartz is also encouraging members of the theatre community to boycott the state because of its “reprehensible and discriminatory law.” He announced this week that he and his collaborators “are acting to deny the right to any theatre or organization based in North Carolina to produce any of our shows. We have informed our licensing organizations and touring producers of this, and I’m happy to say have met with compliance and approval from them.” This means that no theatre in North Carolina will be able to legally produce Wicked, Pippin, Godspell, or Children of Eden so long as the law is on the books.
------------

UPDATEAPR 1, 2016 6:08 PM

A spokesperson from Mayor Bowser's office shared Friday afternoon that the travel ban has already had an impact. According to the statement, "the District canceled the trip of five District Department of Transportation employees planning to attend the 2016 AASHTO GIS for Transportation Symposium in Raleigh, North Carolina."

UPDATEAPR 2, 2016 10:55 AM

On Friday, Google Venture also announced that it would not back any companies in North Carolina until HB2 is repealed. CEO Bill Maris told the firm's partners to "please flag any investments in NC that come through as I am not comfortable deploying dollars into startups there until the voters there fix this."

Again, been there done that. It will be forgotten in a couple of months. It had a small impact on tourism for a bit, but come Fan Fair, people were sleeping in their cars because they couldnt get a room within an hour of the city.
Businesses may move out, but businesses will come in. My county was in the top 10 of job growth across the country within a year of the gay marriage ban. Its a bunch of phony threats.

And the DOT cancelled 5 people's hotel stays! That'll show em! Its nothing but a tiny gesture to look like they are PC.

In case you didn't hear his speech, one of the reasons the governor gave for vetoing it is that it isn't needed.  Georgia always protects religious liberty and this is not an issue here.

This is just stupid. I guess the NFL doesn't believe in individual States' rights to make their own laws. But, whatever. This picking and choosing of some issue is stupid. And, I suppose we can find a law on the books in any state we don't "like". Boo freaking hoo.
