DS2 and DIL had two cats, a 7 y.o. female and a 4 y.o. male. Inside cats.

A couple of months ago, they took the male to the vet because he was eating less and losing weight.

Cat was given antibiotics and returned to his normal behavior, weight stabilized.

Last night, at 1:30, DS texted that the male had died.

This was the friendly, cuddly cat.

They had rushed him back to the 24 hour vet, and were told that he had kidney failure,

they could keep him alive through the weekend for $4,000, then it would be thousands more to give him another month or two of life.

With reasonable certainty that the money and treatment would not give the cat a reasonable period of pain-free living,

they said goodbye and let him go.

We talked with DS while he and DIL cried. The female cat, normally stand-offish, was cuddling with DIL.

What might I have said to comfort him?

Words seem hollow at a time like this, ed. He's lost a beloved pet. It will hurt for a while, but he made the right decision.

It sucks when our children are suffering, no matter how old they are.

I am sorry for your loss, but glad they decided not to bankrupt themselves over an animal whose life would not have benefited.

There isn't anything to say. Just give hugs.

Just be supportive. It is heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet.
There are no majic words for this situation.

I agree. All you can do is offer your sympathy and support.

I'm sorry their kitty died.

I think most of us here have lost a beloved pet, we know how heartbreaking the loss can be. Offer words of sympathy, that's about all you can do.
Sorry for their loss.

Thank you my friends,

sympathy given.

I know that, unless the companion animal is a tortoise or a parrot, we are very likely to outlive them.

DS is upset that this cat only lived 4 years, and should have lived much longer.

True, I know, but ...

that's part of life.

I'm sorry to hear of the pet dying.

Was this a service animal? The title of the thread indicates that it was.

They were right to let the cat go - it was the kindest thing to do. My sympathies to your son, though. I know how difficult that can be.

Very sorry to hear this. We have a cat that will be 18 this month and are trying to steel ourselves to the fact that some morning she is just not going to wake up. I dread this and feel a lot of sympathy for your DS2 and DIL....

My indoor fur baby is 21, going on 22. I, too, know that one day she will be gone, but in the meantime I'm enjoying her! She wakes me up EVERY morning around 4:30 - saying "feed me! feed me! I haven't had ANYTHING for the last 4 hours! "

Ed, all you can do is offer support and sympathy. Maybe you can recount some funny antics he did to amuse you? Your DS & DIL were wise to let him go, instead of prolonging his distress.

They had one cat who would only be nice to DS, not DIL. So they got this one, who was cuddly and comforting to both humans.

Not a service animal, just a really nice kitty.

I'm sorry to hear that ed. There's not much you can say. They made the right decision. We have a 14 year old dog that like others have said we will wake up and he won't be here. He already has a bad tooth and won't make it through the surgery so we will enjoy him while we have him.
