Looks like I'm on the hunt for a new washing machine. Insert opinions here. Get a matching dryer? Front loading? Brands that are good? Horror stories?

Do not buy mine. I have the LG high efficiency top loading washing machine. Short people cannot reach to the bottom. I must stand on my tippy toes. DD12 cannot do the laundry, yet b/c of this.

I can't reach the bottom of any machine, lol. I went to Sears today. So many different models. They are having a big closeout sale starting Thursday. I told them I'd be back.

Don't buy a Kenmore.  The Kenmore label gets slapped on the lowest bidder.

I have an LG front loader. I have to leave the doors open and remove the tray where the soap, etc., goes after I'm done so that it can all dry out. Otherwise, I get black mold. If you have a laundry room where you can leave the doors open over night to dry out, I recommend them. Otherwise, stick to the top loaders. And if you have allergies, go with one that has the allergiene cycle. It's made a world of difference.

I really prefer top loaders. I'm not a big fan of all the new fangled buttons and gizmos. Except my delay wash feature. LOVE that. I can set a load to wash before work, and not have it start until an hour before I get home. No more sour clothes!

If I get the front loaders I can stack them. Then I have room for a chest or upright freezer. Thing is, if I stack then I can't reach the controls for the dryer! Sales girl was laughing at me today when I was looking at a stacked set.

This one is top loading and the dryer controls are on the bottom.  Don't know if you'd be able to get the clothes out, though.  Since it is not front loading though, you could have a stool.

Short girl problems.

I have that too.  It is very very deep.  I don't like having to practically climb in to get the socks out of the bottom.

On the other hand, it does handle a king size comforter so that is nice.

We went back to a basic, top loader that you can choose your water, soil and washing level.

I can't wash 12 pair of jeans anymore, but they seem to get cleaner.

And, our water bill has gone down.

That is the one thing I hate about the new washers.  The machine decides what needs to be done.

I use the soak option often and the bulky/bedding setting too because most of the other settings don't use very much water at all.

And the dryers that think too much and think they know when clothes are dry.  Guess what, stupid machine, only the ones near the sensor are dry.  The others are still damp!

As a "vertically challenged" woman, I, too, had a hard time getting all the small items out of my top loading washer

UNTIL

I figured out that my kitchen tongs would be perfect to pick up everything I couldn't reach! I hang the tongs from the rack above the washer, so they are always on hand. I can also use them to reach into the back of the dryer.

We had a very old ringer washer at one time.

That thing was awesome for comforters and covers and jeans.

And I remember grandma had one that had a tilt basin.

She could tilt it to the side to reach everything.

Why can't the new ones tilt?

I remember feeding wash through the ringers. I was probably 4 years old.

We must own the same one.

I am looking at Samsung

All of the newer front loaders are stackable, you just have to get the brackets to go with.

True.  I just manually set it myself.  One hour, medium heat.  Sometimes I run it longer, if jeans are involved.  Seems like these energy efficient machines use more energy because they run longer.

The one we had was a bit bigger, but yeah. It did a great job.

My grandmother had one.  We saw a bunch when we went antique shopping a few weeks ago.

Not true with my dryer, it senses the humidity in the dryer.  When the dryer stops, the clothes are done!

we use kitchen tongs too! there is a set that lives on the dryer to get stuff out of the washer.  Otherwise, I'm half in the washer getting stuff out.  I'm sure that's quite the sight

That's how mine is supposed to work.

I could actually use the wringer part. I do a lot of hand laundry and wringing is difficult, as I have arthritis in my hands.

I don't think I have that option.  Even when I time dry - it turns off early.
