OK - so when you can't be prepared and pack your wonderful leftovers - what is your go-to lunch costing $5 or so?
I like to go get a bowl of O'Charley's potato soup; it comes with two rolls and is the perfect amount of food for a simple lunch. Total cost is $4.80 and I can usually get it in less time than it takes to go through a drive through if there is a line. O'Charley's has dedicated to-go parking and door with counter. If you call ahead, they will even bring it out to the car.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
We keep stuff in our purses or backpacks, I learned to do this in high school. There was no time between school and practice to go get anything.
But, Subway has $4 sandwhiches.
Most our convenience stores here have fruit for .59 a piece. So I could get a banana or apple, a lunchable or can of soup/chili and a drink for less than $4.
And just about everywhere has a dollar menu now.

There is a pizza place a block away that sells by the slice. They are huge slices so I only need one. So I can get a slice & a drink for $5. There is also Taco Bell. Most of their meals are about $5 & come with a large drink. Not much else around here is $5. Even McD's meals are $7. I've never ordered off the dollar menu. The grocery also makes premade sandwiches in the deli so I can grab one of them & an individual bag of chips for $5 but no drink.

I don't really care if the meal comes with a drink - if it does, I'll get unsweet tea, but I always keep a case of water in my office and prefer to drink water.

I always get unsweet tea too. We have bottled water here to drink so a drink isn't a necessity but if I can get iced tea I will.
I only get 30 minutes for lunch so I have to stay at the hossie. Our cafeteria is pretty expensive. If I don't bring I get a sandwich from Ms. Delores. She is super generous with meats and cheese, I usually have to stop her. A sandwich, chips and a drink is $4 something. Anything else is about $7 for a meal.

There is a pizza place in town with two slices, any kind, two garlic knots, amd a drink for $5. This has tax already included, so it js extremely convenient. Just slap a five dollar bill on the counter amd pick your flavor.

That is really good marketing.

I never run out of lunch food at work because I keep a stash of cup noodles in my desk drawer. The cheapest place to eat near my workplace under $5.00 is McDonalds, and I would rather not eat there. There is also the $1.80 hot dog and drink at Sam's, if you don't mind the large crowds and waiting a long time, since they usually only have 3 people working the whole lunch area (one cashier and two prepping) Otherwise, one can be expected to spend over $5.00 for lunch, guaranteed.

My store has a deli and their soups are amazing as is the salad bar. It's sold by the pound so I am pretty good at being able to portion out an inexpensive amount that is filling. Quinoa is light and filling! We also have a hot bar - daily specials from fajitas to lasagna to curry chicken and rice. Again it's sold by the pound so you have to be cautious about what you portion out.
