Are empty nesters who get dogs a real pain? Why endless dog chat is terminally boring

Is it just me...or are empty nesters who get dogs a real pain? FEMAIl explores why endless dog chat is terminally boring

  • Marion McGilvary explains why she finds dog owners excruciating
  • Finds that empty nesters who buy a dog are impossible to ignore
  • She thinks that people are far too involved in their dog's lives

I have nothing against dogs - as long as they don't have their snout anywhere it shouldn't be without an invitation. But dog owners I find excruciating.

As so many fellow empty nesters are plugging their gap with a dog, it has become impossible to avoid them.

The friends I used to meet exercising their children in the park are now busy exercising their dogs instead. You can't meet them for a coffee without a yomp round a field with a yapping Yorkie, and dog treats zinging past your ear to the praise of 'good boy', when they've done no more than fetched a ball. A slobbery ball they expect me to throw for them.

Marion McGilvary explains why she finds dog owners excruciating - and doggie drool is only part of the problem

These are people who filter tap water and wash bananas. But doggie-drool? It's practically holy water to them.

Two of my friends have ceded offspring to Oxbridge and gained brainless hounds instead. They take precedence above all else. The friends spend more money on the dogs' grooming regimes than on their own, and one of them takes two holidays a year - one of which is a week in a caravan in Scotland for labrador Maisie.

A relative, an esteemed academic who hasn't sent his grandchildren a birthday card for a decade, recently sent his dog to a psychologist because it was off its food.

No person liberated from child-rearing should then leave the theatre early because their dog is alone. And they should be able to come to dinner without their plus-one being a ****apoo.

Then there's the endless dog chat, where people are identified by the breed of their pet ('Oh we ran into sheepdog in Waitrose.' 'I think the Airedales are on holiday.') And when their dog jumps on you with muddy paws, they smile fondly at Dolly the Doberman, who apparently 'likes you'.

Having brought up four of the real things, I don't need a dependent being whose lavatory habits I have to be on plastic-bag-terms with.

And I really don't understand why you do

Some people think dog chat is terminally boring.

Others think endless kid chat is terminally boring.

I know people who natter on endlessly about their grandchildren. Makes me want to stick hot pokers in my ears.

What about the "cat ladies in training?"

People talk to fill time.

If you (anyone) don't like the subject of a discussion, ask the other person an open-ended question about something else.

And, because this author both disagrees and doesn't understand other people's choice they write an article criticizing it.  I wonder if this author is a member of this board?  Fits right in!

 That depends on the topic.

For at least SOME topics--other people might be interested in that.  NO ONE gives a crap about someone else's pets beyond being polite.

I have a friend who is a cat lady, whenever I talk about my children, she talks about her cats. :) I don't mind.

Oh, I understand. This co-worker grates on my nerves, so that definitely plays into things.

People talk about what is important to them. If you care, you will listen.

Not everything in life is quid pro quo.  Some people need more attention than others, some people hardly get listened to at all.

I think, for a friendship to survive, you need to listen as well as talk.

I don't care about their pets.

And they probably don't care about some of the stuff you talk about, either.

Maybe, maybe not--but other people do care about things like politics, sports, TV, music, movies, etc...

nobody cares about someone else's pets.

That's not true.  Sometimes I care more about people's pets than I do the people that own them.  biggrin
