I can only speak from my own experience but my first board I lurked for months. Partly because I was in shock such things existed. MSN just tumbled me into the boards when I clicked a link for an article. Then it seemed everyone knew each other already & I wasn't sure how they would accept an outsider. Maybe they want to get the lay of the land before jumping in.

I think it's mostly for entertainment also. Some people just aren't as social as other people. It's kind of like asking why just read the paper why not write in responses to the articles. Why just watch tv, why not audition to be on it? That's kind of an extreme example but the same idea.

I lurked on GT but just because PBJ was gone and no one could approve me. When LL started this board I joined almost immediately because I loved how there were so many different opinions. There were certain posters I enjoyed very much. Then I posted and a certain poster did nothing but belittle me because I didn't agree with them. I fought back and I'm sure I didn't win many friends but I did and will stand up for myself. I love the joking back and forth but I also love SOME of the disagreements. More so the ones where I'm not personally insulted (I give as good as I get I know) and you LGS keep this place hopping.

Other than talking about his board I can't remember him coming up at all. If you think that this board is not important to that board then why all the lesbian glee over there when someone here flounces and goes there. They end up coming back usually but the glee is hilarious...

There are a few threads that are similar. But I would not say they were taken from here. And yet, there are similar threads on several other boards I belong to, stuff that has made National headlines (political) or people who have cross-posted.

IMHO, lurkers are a good thing. We may be their entertainment, a source of differing opinion, their BSC reading for the day, their "Oh, look, they are being stupid again.", their comic section, their news section, educational section or simply a coffee break. Doesn't really matter as long as they come here and have a sense of knowing the contributors or a feeling of belonging to something familiar.

And just think, one or two of them may be cheering in the background during one of the fights.

I haven't been starting topics because I am preoccupied with some serious things going on in my life right now.
I don't feel comfortable sharing those things here and I find it hard to think about much else.

I do try to keep up with the lets eat thread. It helps me think of new things to cook. Thanks to everyone who's contributes to that thread, I really enjoy it.

I can think of several reasons, right off the bat.

Lurking because you cannot get approved - I lurked on GT, before it folded and everyone moved here, because no one could approve new members at the time I came across the board.

Lurking because you are shy - Some people just want to read and don't have any interest in participating.

Lurking because you really don't have time to devote to a board - Sometimes boards can be a fun distraction, but in a busy life sometimes you prioritize message board membership very lowly and don't raise it's priority for fear of becoming more involved in it at the cost of something else you's otherwise be doing that you don't want to have any conflicts with.

Lurking because interesting topics come up - So you were Googling something and came across a message board. You saw several other interesting things while you were there. Maybe you didn't like the conversations that followed the OP's but you did like or want to look into the original subject. Maybe even to take to a board you are more in-tune with as far as the direction you think conversation on the subject will go. And maybe you keep coming back because interesting topics keep being started, even if you don't agree with the direction conversations take.

Lurking because you were banned, but still like how some people express their opinions on subjects - Just because a person is banned doesn't mean that stop liking people that they liked or the opinions of people they liked.
