Nope.  Although that is what 40% of people say.

9-(3 divided by 1/3) +1.

My first guess was

9-3 (6) divided by 1/3 which is 2 +1 =3.

Parentheses make all the difference.

I'm guessing that is where I messed up too.

I hate math! Luckily in HS I had a teacher that if you submitted all homework you got an automatic C. Worked for me!

This is the poster's son typing:

My mom wanted me to type up an answer telling how to get the answer. I got it right after a second because I'm a senior in high school and happen to use it frequently. So, don't feel bad if you got it wrong. Also: Rowlet is the best starter for Sun and Moon, She-Hulk is the best character in Marvel Comics, the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything is 42 (but we must find the question,) and purple is undoubtedly, undeniably the best color. Have a wicked day.

So I asked Jesse to solve this and told him he could post the answer.

As you can see, he is all mine.

I only got it wrong because I forgot to "flip the fraction and then multiply when dividing by fractions" rule. I did remember the proper order of operations though. Can I get half credit?

My problem with this is that there were no parentheses in the original equation.

The reason the solution includes parentheses is because most calculators that most people have can't enter fractions in their native "numerator over denominator" form. If you have a scientific calculator that has fraction input as an option, you could type it in just as it's displayed.

Even without the parenthesis, you have to divide first. Multiplication and Division come before addition or subtraction. After the division, you work it like a normal problem left to right.

Sooooo.

3 divided by 1/3 = 9

9-9+1=1

No.  Forgetting to flip the fraction is a critical error.

 How did you get 3?

Seriously, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get some of these wrong answers.

If I do it wrong - straight left to right, I get 19.

9 - 3 = 6

6 1/2 1/3 = 2 (incorrect all the way around)

2 + 1 =3

But I can see how someone would get that.

But if I write out my process, I still get full credit in "Common Core" math class!

So here's my "Common Core" worksheet for you:

9 - 3 / 1/3 + 1 = ?

solve the "3 / 1/3" part first due to PEMDAS
3 / 1/3 = 1

The solve with that answer inserted into the rest of the equaltion
9 - (1) + 1 = 9

Yes, I know it's wrong, but I used the "Common Core" standard - so it's still right!
