People in the Boston area LOVE it! The taxi companies are going nuts. Too bad so sad. They were sooo arrogant couldn't see the Forrest through the trees.

We use uber all the time. Never had a bad experience. Always timely and professional. We tip, even though we're not supposed to. Its an awesome experience.

Oh no, well sort of. Drivers buy into using an app that matches them up with people needing rides. Driver has to drive a clean newer car and payment doesn't exchange hands, all done through the app.

Taxi services became very arrogant and monopolistic and the drivers and cars are nasty. They all thought they owned the business, then Uber came a long and the taxi's are throwing hissy fits.

No Uber out here where I live but when I travel for work I use it all the time. The price is amazing and the drivers that I have had all loved driving and were super nice. I tip if I have luggage - but for those who have never used it before, you need to tip in cash, you can't tip on a card.

Yep!

How do you know you're not getting in the car with a rapist or killer or something?

This is way out of the norm for me. We don't have any kind of public transportation. Taxis here are used mainly by Hispanic women.
I'm really curious about this.

It's more like a plain clothes taxi.
And my daughter in NYC was attacked by a taxi driver. She wasnt hurt, and she pressed charges which ended up getting the driver fired. It really isn't any more dangerous than walking down the street. I mean, creepers are everywhere.

There is no Uber in my area. My choices are either the municipal bus or taxis.
I do have a friend in Hawaii (Oahu), where Uber is starting to take hold. She sent me an article about a 24 y.o. driver who was charged with rape of a teenage girl recently. He also attempted to rape other women on different occasions, but they managed to get away. Uber says that they do screen their drivers, but it is handled privately by the company.
There is the possibility for anything to happen. Not having any experience with Uber, that is all I will say.

I'm sorry that happened to your daughter, but very thankful that she didn't get hurt, MM.
There is a bike share program in downtown Chattanooga and waterfront. I like that.
Here, there is nothing.
I thought it might be profitable to have a golf cart type shuttle back and forth between the places down town here. Especially between the couthouse and parking decks.
But the insurance on something like that is crazy.

flan
Thanks flan. The driver actually got into the backseat with her and tried to prevent her from exiting the car and grabbed her wrist. She yelled to attract the attention of people nearby and kicked him. He let her out and she called the cops.

No, but my cousin who lives nearby uses it all the time. She swears by it. I have the app on my phone, but just haven't tried it yet. I've heard good things.
I've had good experiences with taxis. My favorite was one I used in Paris. I was standing at the bus stop with my suitcase, waiting to go to DeGaulle. This man in a beautiful black Mercedes pulled up and asked if I might want him to take me to the airport. He said he was a taxi for hire but wasn't busy at the moment. We negotiated a price, and off we went. He gave me a box of CD's to chose from. I asked him to take me through the tunnel where Princess Diana died. He asked if I wanted him to drive quickly. He was from Brazil, but had lived in Paris for 20 years and was handsome as hell.

When my ex first moved to LA he drove for Uber for awhile. He said with the traffic & the price of gas he barely made any money especially since people were told not to tip. He said he did meet some interesting people.
I don't know if I have Uber out here in the burbs or not. I've never needed it.
We don't have Uber that i know of. This is a rural area. And, my view of it is basically you are catching a ride with a random stranger. And, i don't think i would feel comfortable with that.

That's no different than a taxi...

I will just say I'm glad you are still alive and well.
And me, too. I took a private taxi from the airport, too, once. With friends. Glad we are all still here to reminisce about it!
