School System Deems

Seeks to level playing field by singling out top-tier students for recognition

High schools in a North Carolina county are moving forward with a plan to do away with valedictorians and salutatorians, deeming the academic superlatives “unhealthy” because they promote competition.

“We have heard from many, many schools that the competition has become very unhealthy.”

The school board of Wake County unanimously voted to ban recognizing the two top tiers of students for their hard work. The ban is not official until a vote, which could come on June 7.

“We have heard from many, many schools that the competition has become very unhealthy,” Wake County School Board Chairman Tom Benton told The News & Observer. “We think it’s much healthier to set high expectations and high requirements for magna cum laude. The students now have a target that they can shoot for and if they achieve that they’re recognized for that.”

Instead of honoring each high school’s top two academically achieving students, Wake County says it will use the Latin honors system implemented by colleges to include more students in receiving recognition. Students with a GPA of 3.75 or higher will receive cum laude, students with a 4.0 to 4.249 will be awarded magna cum laude, and students with a 4.25 GPA or higher will earn summa cum laude.

ADVERTISING

Although the schools plan to ban recognition of their valedictorians and salutatorians, the county says it will record each student’s final class rankings on his or her transcript.

But Wake County’s new policy also appears to be just another example of a public school system bowing to both internal and external social pressure to level the playing field between students. Some accuse the county of conforming to “political correctness” and marginalizing the achievements of truly exemplary students.

This year's Wake County valedictorians were themselves split regarding the new policy.

"If you're third or fourth in the class it must really be hard not to get any recognition, but there's something to be said for the value of academic competition," valedictorian Heather Crew told The News & Observer.

Valedictorian Amarachi Achonu added, "It allows everyone to relish their accomplishments and note someone who was just as accomplished as a valedictorian."

Still, others wished to see a compromise between honoring the two top-tier students and recognizing honor students, as well.

"Students  who work hard deserve recognition. But students who've worked really hard deserve a little more recognition," valedictorian Taylor Barr added.

Why do we continue to let the Left ruin what is good about our country? The point of celebrating achievement is to inspire others. To show what is possible through hard work and diligence. The Left hates competition of any kind. They dont' like being held to any standards whatsoever.

Honestly, i am so over it. DD is a competitive athlete as i have posted. She plays a high quality game. This year a couple of the other competitive girls dropped off the school softball team. She is the only left with any sort of athletic ability. Well, at 14, she has done her share of playing and losing games with girls who don't care and don't try. It's getting old. And, propping up the ones who don't care and don't try is a big waste of time. So, we will play this season and she will also play the travel league . But, next year, who needs it? You work hard to do something well, then you get people who think it's all a big joke. I am sick of those people.

Neither of my kids were tops at sports growing up.  DS had skill in hockey and baseball but not a star.  I used to tell him that a team needs all levels of players, not just stars.  He played both sports all through school, mostly on intramural leagues.  Today he still plays hockey, he just loves to play and thinks it's great when there is one person who out shines them.  DD sticks her nose in books. The parents who won't let their kids see the difference in their skill levels and others are setting their kids up for disappointment.  Later in life the those kids will have a lot of issues dealing with superstars in the office.

Thank you flan! That is very nice. DD does work hard. And, there are times she needs to be a teacher and leader as well. And, she has done that. However this year, there is a new girl on the team who was on the basketball team a few years ago. Her mom is an idiot and this girl is totally out of control and obnoxious. She doesnt' listen to anyone, including the coaches. When we coached this girl, she was very disruptive in practice, refused to participate in drills and was a big mouth. And, mom was dropping her off for free babysitting. Same thing now.

There is a HUGE difference between being the top player and being a player who doesn't care, is disruptive, has an attitude and doesn't try.  A team consists of a variety of kids of all skill levels.  And, you may be top at one thing and someone else is tops at another.  DD is a fantastic rebounder and post player in basketball.  But, she is not a ball handler.  She needs her guards to handle that ball under pressure.  It isn't about who scores the most points.  It is about kids who WORK hard to get better, who practice, who have respect for their coaches and teammates and who go out on the floor and do their best.  We had a few kids that would turn the ball  over during a game and just seemed to think that was hysterical.  Ha, ha.  We lost games that the other kids worked their behinds off to win for a few who didn't give a rat's rear.  That is what i am talking about.  The parents who drop the kids off for free babysitting.

BTW, my DD isn't a "superstar".  She just works hard.  She loves to play.  She doesn't have any "i am better than you" attitude.  She is very demure and kind.  That isn't her style.  And, when she played on an out of town travel team, and met up with her own team at a tournament, we beat them. And, she shook their hands, and it was over and she didn't go to school the next day and gloat or crow.  That isn't her style.  However had the shoe been on the other foot, some of those girls would have done just that.

But, you are kind of proving the point. How dare someone work hard and be confident? If they do, oh they have a "superstar mentality'. That is the furthest thing from the truth.

Is that to me?  If so you misunderstood my post.  What I always told my kids is the team is important and if you like to be on the team you have to practice and not worry about not being as good as the superstar.

OK.  Yes, you don't have to be someone else.  You have to be YOUR best.  Play YOUR best.   You can't win any game with one person.  That is why it is important for coaches to recognize and value the contributions of all players.  You don't just celebrate the basket.  You celebrate the Assist that led to the basket.  You celebrate the steal, that led to the pass ,that led to the basket.  All those things work together.

I focus more on effort than ability. If they put their back into something, so to speak, they are praised, regardless of how "good" they might be at it. If they are not good, they most likely don't enjoy it. If they don't enjoy it, find something they do enjoy. And I remind them that being a team doesn't mean you get to be the star. It means you work together to achieve the goal.

Oh, i agree effort is key. When you come to practice, focus, give 100%. And, practice outside of practice. You will never get any better if you don't put any time in beyond the actual practice. Pick up a ball and home and dribble in the driveway.
Last year, when we started one of the girls was the weakest player on the team. And, at first, she didn't really try very hard. Well, then she starting WORKING. And, by the end of the season she was in the starting lineup. She was the most improved player. She worked hard. She gave effort. That warms my heart. It is about effort.
And, on the flip side. We have a player with natural talent. She got lazy and slacked off towards the end of the season. I took her to task for that. If you don't give your effort, you can sit on the bench for awhile.

We can all pretend that hierarchies don't exist. We can pretend there is no valedictorian. In reality, kids know who the smart braniacs are. They know who the athletes are. They know who the best musicians and singers are. They know who is artistic ,etc, etc. But, let's all pretend we are the same. I really don't know how that is somehow a better world in their view.

So the next thing will be they can't announce college admissions. Don't want the kids who didn't study to feel bad when Janie gets a Yale scholarship.

Wake county is more liberal  then the rest loft the state. They have a lot  of  transplants  from new York and other states.

What is up with North Carolina?

Mediocrity!

It's the new greatness!

This is ridiculous.

The valedictorian and salutatorian are earned. Plain and simple. They should be given with respect and honor.

This mediocre-ness is killing us.

I was at the senior awards yesterday. The only things awarded yesterday were the scholarships and honor awards.

The scholarship amounts were read when awarded.

Most were under $750. There were the ones spread over 4 years and there were some in the low thousands.

One guy got an $85k scholarship and one girl got a total of $70k. They were the highest awarded.

There was a woman sitting close to me making comments the whole time ranging from "what are they going to do with that"
to "must be nice" to "they know somebody".

It was disgusting.

My younger cousin earned a full ride to college and the woman made a nasty comment.

I know the work she and her family put in to getting that scholarship. It wasn't a gift. It was hard earned.

People want the reward without the work. And if they don't want to do the work, they don't want anyone else to benefit.

This is totally not a new thing.  I remember playing basketball in highschool as a high-performing player.  I used to win tournament MVP awards, where the votes came from other teams' coaches.  One year we qualified for Provincials (like State finals) and my team decided that they didn't want to go because "practicing is too much work".  I hated them all for a long time.  I wanted to go to Provincials!

Edit: MVP not VIP

I'm so, so glad DS will be going to private school. The PC bs in public schools is sickening.

I was in the top 10 in my graduating class. I worked hard and earned my spot. We had two valedictorians in my class. Twins. Both had the same GPA and took the same classes. One salutatorian. I don't remember any kvetching about students getting recognized for what they earned. It's sad that nowadays mediocrity is applauded.

Again, I don't have to.

You prove it daily.

It's all about the quotes, 'bout the quotes, 'bout the quotes.

Flan,
You live to say that you don't see the world in black and white, but when called out, you expect others to do just that. It can be said that I worship the ground my husband walks on. Well, I've never actually SAID that, but from my posts, everyone know this to be true.
Because you haven't SAID you do not have disdain for successful people, you would prefer us to believe that you don't. Your posts prove otherwise. You don't have to say it, it is obvious in your posts. You are bitter and miserable. You don't HAVE to type those words. Your intentions come through quite clearly...

1. I am successful in my chosen profession.

2. For some reason you need me to be "bitter & miserable" to justify your treatment of me...

3. I'm not the one who feels compelled to keep repeating how "nice" I am, how well-liked, how "important..."

1. You are a part time librarian that is not liked by your co workers. Hardly successful.
2. I do not address you unless you directly address me or something I have mentioned. If you can't take it, quit following me around and leave me alone. (I know, I'm a magnet, its hard to do...but try).
3. I don't have to repeat it. I post about my life. Like everyone else. The fact that you are offended by my life postings speaks volumes. Many here are my friends on Facebook. Everything I post here is pretty much documented there. I'm posting about my life. Get over it.
