Down memory lane.

Who remembers Stuckey's?

Pecan logs, divinity, brittle?

We always stopped at one while on trips.

Where did ya'll always stop on trips growing up?

We always stopped at (stickey's) Stuckey's. We also stopped at Bob's Big Boy's. Then of course South of the Boarder. It's a long trip from South Fl to NY. Especially with 5 kids. My dad tried to make it fun.

Hershey's Semi Sweet bars.

Bit O Honey (guaranteed to take the fillings out of your teeth)

Having a pleasant person wait on you in the department store or specialty shop.

Butchers you could talk to and ask for a special cut or weight.

Wonder Bread (builds strong bodies 8 different ways) Or was that only marketed in Iowa and Southern Minnesota.

Never stopped at Stuckey's but remember the billboards. Bob's Big Boy was a favorite. Loved their hot fudge cake. They still have a couple restaurants around in Cali.

They still sell Wonder Bread, too. I buy it sometimes. I miss the day old bakeries (Wonder) where I could buy a ton of stuff, cheap. They had one in MD I used to go to when I lived in WV.

I miss Pup 'N Taco.

Service station attendants. In the uniform with the hats.

All day shorts and matinees at the movie theater on Saturday.

Nothing being open on Sundays or holidays.

Sunday drives.

Big Boy was a franchise chain, don't miss them. The father of a friend of mine owned 9 here. Yours may have been Bob's, ours were Abdow's.

I miss skating on the ponds at the park, can't do that anymore for safety reasons, not supposed to feed the ducks either, I miss that.

i miss all the neighborhood plays we would put on to earn money.

Believe it or not, there is a chain of Big Boy over here. We have never gone to them, though.... Seems a lot of franchise chains come over here. Wendys, MacDonalds, KFC, 7-11, etc. etc.

I can't tell you how we served them.

Put a heavy, clean glass mug in the freezer and leave it for at least 2 hours.

The root beer needs to be between 34 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

When you open the root beer, let it settle before pouring.

Take mug out of freezer, tilt at a 45* angle and pour the root beer down the side and leave a 1 inch foam on top.

Enjoy.

Yes. We had to master the art of "pulling a beer".

I ran an A&W/Long John Silvers for 8 years.

I thought Wonder Bread, built strong bodies, 12 ways.

confuse

But, I'm old. And getting stressed out.

Wedding coming up, soon.wink

I'm probably wrong.biggrin

I remember nickel cones, at Dairy Queen!

Gosh, I hate ice cream. But, I ate it, back in the day!

Oh, and I'm not crazy.

By the 1960s, Wonder Bread was advertised with the slogan "Helps build strong bodies 12 ways," referring to the number of added nutrients. In 1986, the lower-calorie Wonder Light bread was introduced.

It’s Slinky; it’s Slinky.

For fun it’s a wonderful toy.

What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs

And makes a slinkety sound?

A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing!

Everyone knows it’s Slinky.

It’s Slinky; it’s Slinky.

For fun it’s a wonderful toy.

It’s fun for a girl and a boy.

Question.

Who here sings the Oscar Meyer song to yourself when spelling bologna?

And who passed tests because of School House Rock?

Conjunction junction, what the function?

I'm just a bill, on capital hill.

I don't think we had any special "have to stop there on the way" places. We took many trips, but not wayside stops really stand out for me.

My stroll down memory lane would be more for the bygone days where people tried to be the best, and win the prize, but accepted defeat gracefully if there was someone that was truly better than them or their team.

Back when a man didn't get a dirty look from a woman because he held the door for her, pulled out her chair, or said "after you" and let her go first.

I don't miss the bad parts, but I do miss the good parts.

You are correct, FWM. I wavered between 8 ways and 12; just could not remember the exact ad....

How about nickel candy bars, not to mention fudgsicles,( chocolate flavored ice candy on a stick) popsicles (orange or grape flavored ice candy on a stick) - all of which began to melt immediately and get everything in sight sticky) and frost sticks (vanilla ice cream coated with chocolate and on a stick) But I am guessing they were before your time, most of you... I, being the rich kid, always got a nickle frost stick but my friends who did not have as much money got a nickel popsicle and broke it in two - there were two sticks in it.... so they could share with a sibling.

I can send you a bag of Bit O' Honey if you'd like. (And I lost at least two fillings from eating them.)

My mother used to work for the company that made Wonder Bread (she worked in the office). To this day, I hate Twinkies...

Big boy strawberry pie is my favorite.  It is hard to find in season.  Last time I bought one, I ate it for dinner.

I'm laughing a little, b/c all this nostalgic stuff is still available, including pecan logs.

Just stop at a Cracker Barrel - they carry all that stuff.

 Yep.

I love those things.

I got one for mother's day once.

Best gift since my diamond earrings.

 Yeah.

But it's not just the product.

It's about the experience.

Thank you, Fran.   I am afraid the Bit O' Honey are just a bit hard for me now; never could wait until they melted a bit before eating them.

I remember the Automat! 5 cent coffee, 10 cent pie, 75 cent chicken pot pie. You would insert your coins in a slot next to your preferred item, and the small door would pop open, and you would retrieve your food. Did you know that the Automat got a better grade of beef than the most prestigious restaurants in NYC? Yep. They got the absolute very best, because they would cook it all day, and it still had to taste good. Cooks, not chefs, did the work behind the scenes.

What a fun thread!

We stopped at Howard Johnsons usually. When we went to PA on one side of the road was a place called The Shamrock that we stopped at. On the other side was an old diner that still had working mini jukeboxes on the tables. I don't remember the name but that was my brother & my favorite place. It also meant we were at the halfway point.

I do remember Stuckey's. The last time I stopped there a NC state cop followed me into the parking lot & gave me a speeding ticket.

We had a Shoney's in town that I ate lunch at nearly every day for years. It was cheap & good & reasonably healthy. I'm talking about the grilled chicken & salad bar not the hot brownie sundae which on occasion I would order instead of lunch. They were demolished a few years back.

I watched School House Rock & could sing along with you all still.

The Shamrock is still there, lexxy, on 15. We've never stopped, but FIL said it was good.

Conjunction junction, what's your function! I have a SR DVD for the boys.

There was a Shoney's in Martinsburg when I lived there. I think I went once. But Fazoli's....yum!

Nice to know they are still open FNW!  If I remember it was just before we got on the turnpike.

ETA:  The diner is called Wolfe's Diner.  I just remembered.

There's one around here, but I haven't been. We used to go growing up, too. Heck, my friends and I would go in high school when we wanted to binge on junk food, cry about boys, and hide from others.
