Whole Foods’ 365: Where Kiosks Replace Workers

Whole Foods may still be seen by shoppers as an alternative to corporate grocery chains, but the highly-profitable corporation just opened its first “365 by Whole Foods” in Los Angeles in an effort to use kiosks and robots to cut 60 percent of staffing costs and maximize profitability.

Promoted as a “chain for millennials,” the new “365” stores use about one-third less square footage than the company’s traditional 41,000-square-foot Whole Foods stores, but they also slash almost two-thirds of workers with robots and computerized kiosks.

It should not be surprising that the first “automated” WF store is being located in Los Angeles, where state and local governments have passed minimum wage laws that will push wages up by 50 percent in a series of steps to $15 an hour in 2022.

David Livingston of Wisconsin-based Retail Wire, which follows the grocery industry, toldNational Public Radio, “Most grocery stores can’t afford to pay people $15 an hour.” He believes the industry is driven by thin margins and high-volume turnover. Asked his opinion about government imposing high wage rates, he responded, “It doesn’t work.”

Whole Foods founder and CEO John Mackey originally started “Safer Way” in 1978 as a non-profit in Austin, Texas focusing on natural foods.

As a naïve 25-year–old with a pony tail, Mackey wanted to offer shoppers an alternative to “evil” profit-seeking corporations. But he quickly found that customers were complaining that his prices were too high, workers complaining that they weren’t being paid enough, and government regulators were smacking him with fees, fines, and taxes.

In his book “Conscious Capitalism, Inc.,” Mackey reveals that he lost over 50 percent of his $45,000 investment, before rejecting socialism and renaming the store Whole Foods. “My worldview underwent a massive shift.” He adds, I had become a businessperson and a capitalist, and I had discovered that business and capitalism, while not perfect, were both fundamentally good and ethical.”

When asked by extreme leftist Mother Jones magazine if he runs “Whole Foods Market as a liberal might — with wages and worker benefits and progressive environmental policies,” he responded: “I’m also a conscious capitalist — I believe economic freedom and entrepreneurship are the best ways to end poverty, increase prosperity, and evolve humanity upward. I believe that all forms of socialism have been proven over time to result in a loss of both economic and civil liberties, with increasing poverty.”

The new “365” stores employ 110 people, versus a normal Whole Foods store staff of 230. Whole Foods company spokeswoman Janette Rizk told NPR that Whole Foods reviewed every opportunity to cut costs by increasing efficiencies, in order to pass savings on to Whole Foods shoppers. She highlighted the self-serve kiosks and electronic shelf labels as giving shoppers more information, while minimizing delays in checking prices and avoiding lines at checkout counters.

By unveiling its more modestly priced grocery chain, CEO Mackey said that he wanted to be “the hunter” with the “365” concept, rather than the hunted. That explains why the Whole Foods in-house butchers that usually help customers select special cuts of meat and choose fresh seafood are being replaced at “365” with pre-packaged goods.

NPR found that some customers were not thrilled with the new “365.” Although some said the store prices were more competitive, many said they missed the “high touch” service that had become synonymous with the Whole Foods brand experience.

Whole Foods will opening over a dozen “365” stores along the West Coast, including in Santa Monica, Claremont, Long Beach and North Hollywood.

It sounds like they are listening to that complaint, and finding ways to cut costs.

Sooo, you don't want to pay more money then?  So if we double the minimum wage, then by some magic, prices won't increase?  Oh ok.

Then why does a store like Trader Joe's, which has real people, have reasonable prices?

This same ordering set up has been in use at Sheetz for about 20 years. No one complained about it then.

No. I think it's fine. But, when Walmart does it or fast food, everyone will have a big hissy.

It's because the set up of the stores at Whole Foods makes them have to charge higher prices.  They have fantastic prepared foods, but what doesn't sell has to be tossed.  They carry very pricey organic foods, organic items where organic doesn't make sense.  Their whole set up is like a grocery store that would typically be in the middle of a city where there are no other competitors.  But they aren't in just cities, and that is where they are failing.

Actually, I have studied their business model quite extensively. They are failing because their margins are way higher than the market will bear. They are being killed by Kroger - who is doing organics much better than Whole Foods ever did - and by smaller concept stores like Fresh Thyme that are small footprint sites that look like a farmer's market. Whole Foods prepared foods make them a lot of money at a great margin. And millenials want more prepared foods, so that portion of the business is very successful. But $8 bottles of ketchup don't fly.

Tossing the items that don't sell is called "shrink" and it's built into the price of the item to begin with.

and they need to sell that ketchup for $8 to make up for all the losses.  In the city that flies, not here in the 'burbs.  Their margins are too high for outside a city in an area with no competition.  They screwed up.

Whole foods and Trader Joes are NOT the same kind of store.  Whole foods is bigger, and PREPARES food to take home and eat.  While I love Trader Joes, it is simply a small grocery store.

Exactly what I said. Their margins on the other items are too high. We agree. But the deli items have the cost of the shrink built into them. There is a computer program all stores use that takes into consideration the ingredients used, the cost of the ingredients, and the recipe output. It computes a price for you based on the number of those items you throw away. They don't need the $8 ketchup to make up for the shrink in the deli. That is a ridiculous assertion and shows a lack of knowledge on how the industry works. Shelf stable items are priced to execute a certain margin overall based on individual sales of each item as part of the whole category sales and how that factors into the overall sales for the department. One department doesn't compensate for another.

And, you know, this is my field. I am in the organic-natural foods grocery business. So it's not like I am making stuff up. I know how Whole Foods operates. I was trained by the person who set up their deli department. But whatever. I am sure you know more than I do.

I went to Whole Foods once on my lunch hour to make myself a salad. The cheese on the salad bar had mold, and it wasn't bleu. I turned around and left.

I'll stick to TJ's, too.

I do know that if you cut waste, that built in cost will go down.

Cook less, more often. Better quality, less waste, lower prices.

Never been to any of those, we don't have those stores.

We have Kroger, not a fan of ours, too big, too pricey.

Bilo was bought out by Food City. It isn't fancy but prices are reasonable and the store is clean.

Food lion is a mile from my house. Prices are ok. Smaller store. They have what you need and not much else. You won't find 12 kinds of ketchup.

Save a lot is small and dirty and only carries canned goods.

Delray has a lot of veggies but it isn't consistent.

Never been in Aldi. It's on the other side of town and I'm never over there.

Then there are the Mexican grocery stores. I don't go in those. They stink. Like death and decay. Not kidding. They do not clean properly.

My favorite was the huge international (mostly asian) market I used to have nearby. Freshest produce, meat, fish I'd ever seen. Huge selections, too. And cheap.

In the summer, between the flea markets and farmers markets and road side stands, there really isn't a reason to go to a grocery store.

Around here, anyway.

And more and more people have phones, tablets, or these access portals like the kiosks in OP or libraries.

I've never bought anything at a Whole Foods store. I went in one once and couldn't believe what the prices were.

Be that as it may though, kiosks are coming, whether we like the idea or not. And not just to Whole Foods.

Does anyone remember Service Merchandise?

There used to be a store in Indy & I worked there during college. The only salespeople were in the jewelry department. For other items, you looked at a display model & filled out an order form, which was sent to the warehouse using pneumatic tubes.

Does anyone remember Best Products? I think I furnished my first apartment with goods I bought at that store.

Give it time, flan. If the Democrats get control again, they will probably hand out free tablets like they did phones.

 We only have Democrats running.

Contrary to Democratic thinking - the president is not a dictator.  Congress controls the purse strings - and that little tidbit was just reiterated by a federal court.

Now you do. We were told that approximately 30% of the county that I work in does not have wifi access. It can be as simple as the placement of towers.

And like I said, give it 10, maybe 20 years.

No, you said you didn't know "anywhere that doesn't have wifi."

flan

Yes. I said I didn't know of anyplace without access.

You obviously have some way of connecting to the Internet from work.

You post from there.

And I said give it 10 to 20 years and just about everything will be done online.

I don't know what you are trying to argue here.

That's a problem in many basements, I would guess. I went to a conference at another library in our county and there was no wifi access in the basement meeting room.
