If you're driving 60 mph and give 3 seconds following distance to the car in front of you, that's 264 feet - over 81 yards! You're going to find it very hard to drive on highways if you insist on having over 80 yards between you and the car in front of you.
Even if you drop that down to one second, it's still 27 yards. I try to drive with about a car length between the vehicle ahead of me and myself. I think anybody who drives with less than half that length is a tailgater. And there are lots of them out there.
