I need some DIY meal ideas for two 10 year old boys to be able to assemble and eat without adult supervision. So far all I can come up with is to stock some chips and shredded cheese so they can microwave nachos. Other than that...I got nothin. Help!

My mother used to get us those frozen hamburger patties. They just heat up in the microwave and you put them on a bun.

Do they eat salad? Leave grilled chicken to put on the salad.

As much as I dislike the stuff you can buy mac and cheese where you just add water to the cup, microwave for two minutes, and then add the cheese.

My kids love fancy buns. Seriously, if we buy pretzel buns or brioche buns and some fixings like pickles and sliced tomatoes they will go to town on sandwiches.

Frozen dinners?
Fruit. Cereal.
Canned ravioli. Hot dogs.
Popcorn.

Now I am hungry.

Shredded chicken, warmed in microwave.
Shredded cheese
Avacdo ranch
Diced tomatoes
Wrap in tortilla wraps

Hot dogs

Cook garlic bread, slice and store in fridge.
Then warm slightly
Top with favorite sauce
Cheese
Pepperoni
Microwave about 30-45 seconds or cheese is melted.

Make hamburger patties and they can warm them the next day for burgers.

Whatever you make for dinner, make two extra servings. They can warm that up.

Spaghetti is easy to warm up.

And of course there is always peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

What's her phone number?  I'm going to call and straighten her out.  AND tell those boys to put the Mentos in the Coke on the living room table.

I actually have her number in my phone tyvm. She was shocked when I called her when she was in TX. But yes, she would probably tell me she changed it to that!

MICROWAVE POPCORN!! My kids can live on that.

 Totes!

My kids liked melting shredded cheese on a rice cake, and yes, there are brands of rice cakes that don't taste like cardboard.

 Okay, I went to check:

I buy wild rice or brown rice cakes from Trader Joes. I've also seen them at Kroger. They have a slightly nutty taste.

Toasted cheese sandwiches. Scrambled eggs. Unless you don't want them to use the stove at all. How about some microwave Lean Cusine type dinners? You can get some that are pretty good like chicken and rice, etc.
Or, if you have time, prepare the meals yourself and plate them and cover them with saran wrap and leave them in the fridge for them to heat up.

How many meals are we looking at? Do they have to be healthy, or just convenient?

Well, now is the time to teach healthy eating. Convenience will always be convenience. Nothing wrong with some convenience foods if you are choosy.

Wow thanks for all the suggestions guys! This is going to be for most of the duration of their summer vacation.
Unfortunately SO's son is way picky, but his friend will eat just about anything. As for picky eaters though, if he is hungry enough he will eat whatever I make, otherwise tough luck (imo). His dad doesn't have that same train of thought, but he's not the one who is worried about the food situation so...

So make what you make and yeah, if he's hungry....10 years old is old enough to learn to broaden your tastebuds. Make taco meat and the fixins' and let them assemble their own tacos. Make a pasta bar and let them pic their own sauce and serve some breadsticks and a salad to go with. Buy boboli pizza crusts and sauce and the fixins and let them chose their own toppings. Make some homemade baked chicken nuggets and let them chose their own dipping sauces, and have a salad or two out for them to help themselves to.

Personally, I would make whatever you want to eat as a family, but serve it in a way where they think they are making their own decisions which will make it fun for them. Otherwise, it will be a looooooonnnnnggggg summer if you play the role of the Burger King host (have it your way), if you know what I mean.

I was thinking these are for lunch while the adults are working, right?

Keep it simple.

Leftovers will do the job.
