A good Samaritan bought $80 worth of candy after he noticed a young girl being 'harassed' for selling the treats outside his local Target.

The girl, who has not been identified, was sitting outside the store in Rowland Heights, California, selling packs of candy for a dollar each when an elderly woman approached her and began interrogating her, witnesses say.

'She comes up to the little kid like, 'Where is your license? Have you asked permission to be here?'' shopper Andy Lizarraga told CBS.

Lizarraga said the girl had tried to explain that she was just 'trying to make some money'.

But the older woman was yelling and 'harassing' the youngster who broke down in floods tears during the exchange.

The elderly shopper even threatened to call the police before good Samaritan Jay Lopez intervened.

'When I walked up, she was crying hysterically,' he said. 

Lopez stepped in and offered to buy the entire box of candy - which cost $80 - to put an end to the confrontation once and for all.
