Price of glasses ....

This question will be on multiple boards ... Just so nobody thinks I'm trying to pull something

There is a $20 groupon for $200 towards glasses & lenses with a second pair free. The ad is directed at single vision lenses but the will include progressives (what I have). The $200 will likely cover just frames in my world. But ... I would basically have to cover the full cost of lenses (which is still a great deal as the 2nd pair is stil free). However, I don't have extended health coverage, so 100% out of pocket.

Anyone have any idea as to the price of a set of progressive lenses? (I'll do the currency conversion - CDN is crap compared to USD).

Also, I will call the store tomorrow, but I have no patience. I WANNA KNOW NOW!!!!

I'm not sure of the breakdown, but DH just bought he's titanium frames with progressive, transition and glare resistant lens. It was just over $550.

My frames with progressive and transition lens were $700.

One thing to watch out for when ordering on line is you need to know a few things beyond your vision w/r to the "20/20" thing, distance between the eyes and the lenses is a huge deal.

I'm just going to get some drug store readers.

I don't need them all the time.

My insurance pays for my glasses. I think I was out of pocket $20. Does Canadian insurance not cover eyecare?

Extended health does. The kind you get through your employer. Basic MSP (socialised version) doesn't. If I needed non-elective eye surgery, then yes. Prescription glasses? No.

We bought the frames DD liked online for a fraction of what the eye doctor wanted for them. It was like getting 70% off or more (I can't remember) then we gave the doc the frames and bought the lenses from him. It saved us a bundle. Just a suggestion if you had not thought of it already.

Her frames were $300 at the eye doctor I think but we bought them for around $80 or so. Can't remember exactly. She wanted the designer frames and they were nice !

Last time I tried that they refused to reuse the old lenses. I don't remember why.

Well we had to buy the lenses because her RX changed. Maybe that's the difference ?

That or the old lenses were not the same shape as the new frames.

Sorry - that was a typo. The wouldn't reuse the old FRAMES.  Using old out of date lenses would not be a good idea!

I think that this was closer to what I paid when I had my last insurance-covered pair.

That is extremely rare.  We have vision insurance, but for buying glasses - it only pays for the bare minimum.

Same here.  They paid $144.60 so the total amount was $882.

Yup - this is what I'm looking at with the groupon. Progressive lenses start at $600 and go up from there. The groupon is $20 And is worth $175 towards 1 complete pair (lenses + frame) AND a free complete scone pair (which can be sunglasses for +$40 for the tinting. So ...

$600 (lenses) + $200 (frames?) - $175 = $725 for 2 pair. Which is about $360 each pair. If I can find $725 it might be a good deal.
