The family of an Ohio schoolteacher who killed himself after his wife was left permanently disabled in a rock attack say the gang of teens who threw the rock bear the blame for the man's death.

Father-of-four Randy Budd, 55, shot himself dead at his Uniontown home late Saturday night, just over two years after his wife Sharon suffered catastrophic injuries at the hands of a group of teenagers.

Three criminals threw the five-pound rock off an overpass on Interstate 80 in central Pennsylvania in July 2014.

It smashed through the window of her family car as her daughter Kaylee was driving  - leaving her in need of constant care.

Family and friends say Mr Budd has now become the second victim of a tragedy that irrevocably changed his family.

'Randy Budd did not die from a gunshot. He died when those kids threw a rock through his windshield,' Peter Johnson, the Union County district attorney, told Penn Live.

'They killed him like they killed her.'

Since she was hit with the rock Sharon has undergone seven surgeries, losing part of her brain and one of her eyes that means she requires round the clock care at home

The attack on Sharon Budd led a state senator, Gene Yaw, to introduce legislation requiring fencing on new and renovated overpasses.

Before committing suicide, Mr Budd texted Yaw, writing: 'Please get the fence issue settled.'

Mr Budd and his wife were the only ones at home when he killed himself, reports suggest.

He also texted his family members saying he loved them before pulling the trigger.

Mr Budd is survived by his daughter Kaylee, and his three sons; Lucas, James and Joe.

Lucas was in the U.S. Army and served overseas. His father proudly posted images of him in full combat gear on his Facebook.

Budd was vice president of sales and marketing of Radius Hospitality, a Canton, Ohio, hotel management and sales and revenue management solutions company.

Before that he was a baseball pitcher, and was even drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 1981 draft out of the University of Akron.

District Attorney Johnson, who prosecuted the four youths responsible for Sharon Budd's horrific injuries, released a powerful statement as news surfaced of her husband's death.

So she survived and needs constant care but he is so selfish he "couldn't deal" and left his kids to carry the weight of their mother and now his death.

Some dad.

OMG, wow.  I can't believe you are going to pile on him.  The people that did this destroyed this family.  You don't know what was going on.  Sheesh.

Oh please.

He left his kids to deal alone.

Selfish.

Flame away.

I don't care.

Yeah, it was a terrible tragedy and I feel so sorry that this happened to them.

But he checked out when his family needed him most.

Do you ever react with an ounce of compassion? This is whole thing is just a terrible human tragedy across the board and the destruction of an entire family.

I thought the way Lily did too. And then my neighbor set me straight. just months before I bought my current house, her husband walked into the woods next to our houses while she was at work and the kids at school and killed himself.

When I was originally told this story, I thought how selfish of him to do that to his family. But the truth is, whatever demons possessed him, he was so depressed over, such a negative person to be around that he actually thought his family would be better off without him. That is why he killed himself, to set them free of his bondage and any obligation they felt toward him and their pain in living with him and his baggage. His thought process was that he did it so they could move on with their lives and be happier. As twisted as that sounds, that is what suicide usually is about.

No. I don't agree with the article. He killed himself - that was his choice. People have the choice of how they react, right Gaga? Isn't that something you've posted over and over and over again?

Something terrible happened to his wife, but he is the one that chose to end his life rather than deal with it.

And IKWTDS - this is not the same situation as your friend. This man couldn't handle that his wife was different and disabled, and he chose to leave her.

Yep. A tragedy.

That he just made 1000x worse for his kids.

It's a tragedy but now he left her alone. I'm sure he was overwhelmed with her care but he could get help with that. Now she is alone. I can't imagine her loss. Her life as she knew it & now her husband & caregiver. If her kids can't care for her she'll end up in some care facility. She is still young & may linger there for 20+ years. I agree with Lily that this was a selfish act on his part. I'm not without compassion for him but I feel more for her.

I guess he didn't really mean that "in sickness and health" part of the vows.

Or he did - which is why he killed himself so "death could do them part".

I think that he was very selfish, also. Those poor kids (even if they are adults now).

I am sure it doesn't occur to anyone here that maybe he suffered PTSD seeing half his wife's brains splattered in front of him. But yeah i guess you can piss on his grave if u want. He didnt create that situation.

No. He didn't create the situation that permanently injured his wife.

But he sure did create the situation of his children now having to bare, not only the constant care of his wife, but the grief of losing their father.

He wasn't driving their daughter was.  So if anyone has PTSD it's her & now her dad committed suicide on top of it.

I'm not pissing on his grave.  I said I had compassion for him but I have more for his wife that he has now left alone in the world to fend for herself because he couldn't hack it.

I feel for the family. Suicide has affected many of my friends' lives, and I've seen it from the side of the survivors. It's a selfish and cruel thing to do to your family. Granted, they are not thinking like a sound person. If they were, they would not do it, most likely.

People with suicidal thoughts need help. But there is no one to blame but themselves.
