Witnesses have described the gruesome scenes at a Kansas theme park where a boy, 10, was decapitated when he flew off a waterslide and hit a safety net.
Caleb Thomas Schwab, the son of a Kansas state legislator, was killed after he plummeted from the 168-foot-tall Verruckt ride at Schlitterbahn Waterpark, hitting the net, on Sunday.
Esteban Castaneda, who was at the Kansas City waterpark, told ABC 7 he heard loud booms coming from the ride before noticing a body wash down after a raft.

Witnesses say Caleb flew off the ride at around 50ft from the ground and hit the netting
When he ran forward to help, he saw a lifeguard desperately trying to hold back a gathering crowd.
As he looked down, he says he saw the young boy who appeared to have been decapitated.
Two women, still strapped into the raft, were injured with another witnesses describing one as having blood pouring down her face.
One of those women's jaw was broken and the other had a broken face bone, according to reports.
They have not been named but one woman described it as the 'worst day of her life.'

Police spokesman Officer Cameron Morgan said the boy's cause of death has not been confirmed. But officers are conducting a death investigation at the park
The front seat of the raft - where Schwab most likely sat - was empty.
Kansas City Police confirmed the boy had died from a 'fatal neck injury at the end of the ride.'
Kobey Lyons told the Dailymail.com that he'd been told by woman at the park that day that the velcro straps on the ride were not working properly on the day of the tragedy.
He said that blood was spotted 'all over the slide' which had tarps thrown over it to cover it. The boy's body was covered up with a sheet.
Another witness Kelsey Friedrichsen said she's seen Caleb fly out of the ride after the first drop and hit the netting enclosing the ride before plummeting 50ft.
There were also suggestions that the harness on the raft was not working correctly.
She then saw Caleb's body on the ground and his family standing nearby crying.

See.... now THAT is how I wanna go! Sliding down an awesome slide with a happy scream in my lungs, and then without warning... just a quick lights out.
But seriously, this is horrific and I feel so bad for the family and anyone that had to witness this. At least the poor boy didn't suffer.
They were just talking about this on CNN, the police are now saying it was a neck injury.
It wasn't a complete decapitation.

Sounds like he flew out of his seat and hit the caging. The ladies who were with him also suffered facial injuries. I mean, i understand that life involves risk. But, this ride seems very poorly thought out. Most parents don't want to endanger their children. Rides with the illusion of danger is one one thing. But real, actual danger is another. And, they just ended the age requirement and put in a height requirement? Was there any real thought that there are a lot of skinny kids? And, if the raft has to weigh 400lbs when loaded, then 2 ladies and skinny boy obviously won't fit that bill.
It's gotten to the point where I don't know if I even like amusement parks anymore. Maybe I'm just getting old. But it seems too many things like this happens. So scary and so sad.
Well, i mean allowing 10 yr olds on rides that go 65mph what could wrong? In reality, we know that accidents are rare. However, i have more confidence in places like Disney or much more established venues. On the other hand, part of the thrill of riding "the Bullet" was knowing that is was put together with rusty bolts by drug addled carnies. Kind of added to the thrill. Nothing will ever be 100% safe. However, it seems like this slide had issues in getting it open and wasn't studied or as thought out as some other rides.
This was at Schlitterbahn. It's been in business since 1979.
This was a freak accident.
The difference between this water coaster and a roller coaster is one has a safety bar.
It's terrible that this happened.
But no way would I stop going to amusement parks.

"Please arrive with everyone in your group of 2-3 riders. The entire group together must meet the weight and height requirements (every rider must be at least 54 inches tall and your group must weigh between 400-550 pounds – no single rider over 300 pounds) in order to make reservation - See more at: www.schlitterbahn.com/kansas-city/rides/all-new-verruckt"
How do they verify how much the group weighs before letting them go?

They've weighed me each time. My weight decided the strength of the rope and harness. Its not something that is restrictive.
I've also parasailed. They take into account the weight of all flyers.
This is not unheard of...
I was thinking this too. We had to each give our weight when we went on the parasail. They took our word for it though, didn't weigh us themselves, but since it was a safety issue, none of us were shy about listing our real weights, lol

There are a ton of stories circulating from people who had ridden this ride and saying they expressed concerns about the harness not working, or that no one was asked height, age or weight.
The tests show the raft flying off the slide
So they installed a metal casing. Did it never occur to any of these engineers that someone airborne inside this cage might hit their head off of it? Geez
