A 33-year-old man drowned at a water park in Washington state on Saturday evening, raising questions about the competence of the lifeguards employed there.
The tragedy occurred at Wild Waves, a theme park located in Federal Way, a few miles northeast of Tacoma. The water park pool where the drowning occurred was closed to visitors on Sunday.
According to KIRO-TV, the man, who by some accounts was near six feet tall and may have weighed at least 240 pounds, was last seen alive in one of the activity pools.
Witnesses told the television station that lifeguards on the scene were slow to react when it was apparent that the man was under water and in danger.

Wild Waves Theme Park Activity Pool (seen here) is where a 33-year-old man drowned on Saturday as witnesses say lifeguards looked on
The lifeguards were said to have been combative, indecisive, and arguing amongst themselves about what to do next – wasting precious minutes as the man's life hung in the balance.
When first responders tried to resuscitate the man, it was too late.
'At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, our lifeguards pulled a 33-year-old male from the activity pool,' the water park's management said in a statement. 'Lifeguards and first responder teams immediately administered CPR and 911 was called.'
'At 5:33 p.m., South King Fire and Rescue crews arrived on scene and continued rescue efforts. Unfortunately, the man did not regain consciousness. We are helping authorities with the follow-up investigation.'
'Our thoughts are with the family in this difficult time.'

Wild Waves, which is located in Federal Way, Washington, closed the pool where the drowning took place on Sunday, though visitors flocked to other parts of the park
KOMO-TV interviewed a former lifeguard who worked at the theme park. He said that he was concerned for the safety of visitors after observing their behavior while on the job.
'You know, you're a lifeguard and I think they need to take that a little more seriously,' Brad Lampman told KOMO-TV. 'They weren't watching, one of the girls was sitting there talking to her friends.'
The identity of the victim has not been released for publication.
The lifeguards, most of them, were useless at Bethany Beach. Too busy standing up giving signals to each other and putting their umbrellas up to notice anything happening. It was a joke.
Unless it speaks to some prejudice on the part of the lifeguards.
