OK - the police in France are fining Muslim women for wearing "burkinis" or making them remove clothes.

Now - let's put religion aside, and any negative feelings about Islam, please, and just address the absurdity of this.

The burkini does not cover the face - it has a headscarf, long sleeve shirt and leggings made out of swimsuit material.

How is that different from say....a wetsuit?  A linen pantsuit and hat?  A long sleeve rashguard, baseball cap, and pants?

Are we really going to tell people they actually have to expose their heads and flesh to the sun to be allowed on a beach?

I just think it's ridiculous that French police are making Muslim women take off clothes or pay a fine for simply wanting to cover their bodies up.

I don't have a problem with them as long a they don't cover the face. I understand the French higher court struck down the ban, however. At least I think I read that somewhere the other day.

Actually, from a sun protection perspective, they are fabulous.

I don't understand what the big deal is. They are covered. Who cares what somebody is wearing in the water?

Yes, but only for the town that was sued.  Each town with such a law will have to be sued to get rid of it.

One of the images was really disturbing. A woman sitting on the beach surrounded by policemen with guns being told to take her clothes off.

That's just crazy.

When i was a kid, i used to burn easily. Even despite sunscreen. So, in order to survive my childhood of hours and days spent at the public pool, i had to wear a tshirt. You were allowed to wear a white cotton tshirt only into the pool. I mean i can understand why they would want you to wear a certain material. You weren't allowed into the pool with cutoffs or anything like. Personally, i can't see why they can't make more swim type clothing. Like swimshirts and other coverings. Honestly for some of those big fat flabby men, i would much prefer to see their sausage bodies covered!

Now if you are swimming in the ocean, then who the heck cares what anyone is wearing?

They do.  See the pictures above.  You can get full body swimwear, even if you are not Muslim.

Jojo has long sleeve rashguards - she burns easily.

That is a slippery slope they are going down. I don't like it. What will they do next? pick out a uniform and make the whole country wear it?

Considering some of the bathing suits, or lack there of, at pools and beaches, these could be amazing at helping keep lunch down.

What about wetsuits?  Are they allowed?

Well, yes.  Because the ban is specifically for religious wear on the beach, to be interpreted by whoever is enforcing it.  One woman, who wasn't even Muslim, was required to remove a long sleeve shirt.

If it is an actual burkini like you posted, I see no problem with it. Where it gets tricky is when people don't wear the ones made of swimsuit material - those are a drowning hazard. The billowing material makes it difficult to see if someone is struggling or not and it also weighs people down. In the ocean it makes it all but impossible to swim with all the material going against you in the current. I have seen several people wearing that type of regular burka in the water and it looks very dangerous. However if it is made of swimsuit material I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

It is not that many years ago that all women were covered in completely ridiculous "swimming" suits that allowed nothing but their face to be seen....Think 1900's.

If the police are ordering ladies to take off their clothes, something has gone terribly wrong.

That's utterly stupid. Were they several bottles into the Bordeaux when they crafted that ordinance?

Do these communities make a lot of their income from tourists,

looking to swim and sun naked?

Or looking to look at people sunning and swimming naked?

I burn very easily so I am often covered up on the beach. I could understand if they were bulky or loose and made it easy to hide something such as a big gun or a homemade bomb but my husband could hide more in his baggy swim trunks. It's just a reaction to the fear of the radicals.

While I see your point - the women were not in the water, they were on the beach.  Being on the beach doesn't mean you are going in the water.  And it shouldn't matter - if the clothes are legal off the beach, they should be legal on the beach.

That's it exactly, in my opinion. If being covered up is legal, then it's legal. Why should there be laws forcing people to strip just because they are at the beach.

I believe France outlawed burqas awhile ago....So, no, they would not be legal on the streets either.

They only outlawed the ones that cover the face.  Head scarves are still legal.

Gotcha.

Personally, I cannot imagine how horrible it would be for someone to "make" me remove clothing at the beach or anywhere, except for a basic security search.
