TOPIC: Teacher is disciplined for forcing student, 15, who said 'America sucks' to stand up for the pledge of allegiance
A teacher has been disciplined for trying to force a student who said 'America sucks' to stand during the pledge of allegiance.
Michelle Alfano, 53, was punished after telling 15-year-old Shemar Cooper to get out of his seat at Eisenhower High School on Blue Island, Illinois, during the recital at the beginning of a Spanish class last week.
The teenager quickly apologized for his remarks, but refused to say sorry for staying seated.

The next time the youngster was in her class he made the same protest, so she tried to physically remove him from the seat.
His mother, Kelley Porter-Turner, told CBS Chicago the staff member has now been suspended for her actions.
Michael Stillman, an attorney for Community High School District 218, wouldn’t confirm the punishment.
But he did say her behavior did not rise to the level of a fireable offense.
Porter-Turner said: 'I am very happy with the outcome, and what this tells me is my son’s First Amendment right was definitely violated.

The teen (left with his mom right) quickly apologized for his remarks, but refused to say sorry for staying seated. But he then tried it a second time, so Alfano tried to physically drag him up
'I’m grateful that the teacher was reprimanded, suspended, because it sends a message to other schools that you cannot violate children’s First Amendment right and get away with it.
'As long as she was held accountable, and she’ll never do it again. You know, everybody has to learn from their mistakes.
'I’m not a hard or cold-hearted person. I’m very forgiving. I have released any anger that I had towards his teacher.'
Shemar's actions come amid controversy over San Francisco 49ers quaterback Colin Kaepernick's decision to take a knee during the singing of the national anthem.
More NFL players and other professional athletes have followed his example, stirring further controversy.

He does realize it's because of everything that flag stands for, that he even HAS a first ammendment?
I remember a time this kind of thing would have ended careers.
This family might even have been shunned and run out of town.

I very dear friend of mine shared her experience, as a young rebellious teen. She came home day in Philadelphia strutting around saying, "I'm African and I'm proud!" etc. Well, her uncle immediately booked a flight, got her a passport, and hauled her black ass over to Africa and asked her if she wanted to stay there. She shaped up real fast and has been one of the most patriotic, unbiased individuals I have ever known.

I was in DD's class this morning and I was so impressed. They all stood with their hands over their heart, looking at the flag for the Pledge of Allegiance. Afterwards the Principle came over the intercom and talked about 9/11 and asked for a moment of silence while she played the God Bless The USA song in honor of Patriot's Day, they all sat quiet and attentive and some were singing along. It was really moving. The teacher made a point to tell all the kids how proud she was of them for being so respectful.
They do that at my boys' school, too. Every morning the Pledge, hands over hearts, standing and facing the smart board where the flag is displayed. They do an awesome Veteran's Day tribute, too. I went one year and it was so touching my eyes teared up.
I didn't know the Pledge of Allegiance was said in public schools anymore.
I teared up a little reading your post NAOW. I'm glad the kids are respectful.
As for the OP, that is deplorable. The teacher was wrong to bodily try to remove him from his seat but his disrespect is disgusting. His mother is even worse. Like Lily pointed out that flag he refuses to acknowledge with mama's approval is what gave him that right.
Caitlyn was 6, in first grade when the attacks happened.
Of course, parents flocked to the schools to bring their kids home.
A few days after was an open house.
I asked the teacher how the whole thing was being handled.
She said they were not allowed to discuss it with students.
And if students brought it up, they were to redirect the conversation if they could, if not the child was sent to the school counselor, and they would assess the situation and call the parent if need be.
It was probably middle school before they talked about it in history.

Interesting. When my kids were in kindergarten they learned about it. I took them to the memorial exhibit at one of the Smithsonians. They saw it before I did and proceeded to tell me all about it. Then I shared my experience, seeing the smoke from the Pentagon, fleeing my building, reports of suicide bombers on the streets, etc. Scary times. I did not mince words. The fact remains is that I am hear to talk about it so obviously I survived it. But I still can't talk about what I saw and heard at the trial without tearing up.
That was the day America truly lost it's innocence. When we heard hijackers, we thought that meant flying the plane to another location. We couldn't even comprehend the evil that was about to take place.
I wanted to control how and what information they were getting.
And at the time, we adults were having a hard time wrapping our heads around it.

The boys were still in their jammies and I just wrapped a blanket around them and took off.
It was chaos at the school.
They had every available person pulling kids that day.
You walked in, showed your ID, told them who you wanted and they signed them out.
They had runners bringing the kids to parents.
And crying.
Everyone was crying.

I had the opposite thought, Lily.
I knew my kids were safe.
I wanted to see what was going on.
So, I left them at school.
Let them go through their normal day.
And did my best to hide the news reports, until Wayne and I could get a grip on it.
It wasn't really about being safe.
I wanted my kid with me.
