I had a tenant ask me today if I would draft and fax a letter to DHS stating that her rent was more than her rent actually is so that she could increase the amount of food stamps that she receives. Seriously, when did this become okay? Why would you even ASK a landlord to do that. I know that she is having some financial difficulties. I get it. Really. And if SHE wants to lie, there's nothing I can do about that, but I cannot believe she asked ME to lie. IN WRITING!! For the record, this is not someone that I actually know, just a tenant. A short term tenant at that. Not that I would agree for someone I know, but I could at least understand a little better how they might be comfortable enough with me to make such a request in the first place. I'm not looking for advice here, I just wanted to vent a little.
Also, I told her that while I would gladly write a letter containing her leasing information if she needed me to, I would not lie about the amount of rent that she pays as to do so would be to commit welfare fraud.
And of course I just had a fight with some loser trying to rip off the SSI system. Kicked out of my office.
Please help me! Get out!

This particular tenant is a nice enough woman, but she has some serious boundary issues. The fact that I am not her friend seems to be lost on her. She calls me sweetheart all the time. I HATE that!!! And she is only a few years older than I am, so it isn't an age thing. I hope she gets her act together. I think she means well.
I had to fraud welfare in order to get off of it. Sorry. Not cool with it, but I didnt want to end up like my relatives and be on it for the rest of my life.

They go to the 'Dr.' upstairs but barge into my office thinking I work with him. Umm, read the big insurance sign? Sooo I see his ninja sister around 1pm. I mean muslim. Then he comes in screaming I must got help him find her. Ok, you are trying to rip off the system. Go figure it out yourself. They coach each other on the bus of what to say to get the SSI.
Oughttabe, I don't know that I wouldn't make the case worker aware of the attempt to commit fraud.
And the ones cheating SSI and SSDI need to be reported, too.

If I though she was being malicious, I probably would report her. I don't. I think she genuinely thought it was okay. She seemed totally oblivious. In my personal experience, there is a subset of the population that believes there is nothing wrong with telling the government whatever it takes to get you the most welfare benefits. I mean, it's just government money, who is it hurting, right?? There is a disconnect between where the government GETS the money and their payment of it.
