Police say they’re searching for two suspects who posed as repairmen and installed skimming devices in ATMs at five supermarkets in Nassau County.

Skimmers were installed at King Kullen stores in Garden City Park, Rockville Centre, Franklin Square, Massapequa Park and Valley Stream from Aug. 20 through Sept. 16, Det. Sgt. Richard Harasym, commander of the Nassau police Crimes Against Property Squad, said Thursday in an interview.

A surveillance video obtained by News 12 Long Island shows one of the men opening an ATM and planting the skimmer.

 

The men installed the skimmers while wearing uniforms and baseball hats bearing what appears to be the logo for the National Cash Register Corp, which services the ATMs that were tampered with, Harasym said.

The men later returned to the stores to retrieve the data collected by the skimming devices, according to Harasym.

Police say they don’t believe NCR was involved in any wrongdoing or at fault. The company couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

After learning of the incidents, King Kullen shut down all ATMs in its system and contacted police, a spokeswoman for the supermarket chain said.

“We take this situation very seriously and are continuing to assist in the investigation,” King Kullen said in a statement.

Anyone who used the ATMs should check their bank accounts for irregularities, Harasym said.

Earlier this week, Suffolk County National Bank said some of its customers had money stolen from their accounts after a skimming device was used at one of their branches. In August, skimmers were discovered in NEFCU ATMs at the credit union’s branches in New Hyde Park, Franklin Square and Wantagh, police said.

Police ask anyone with information regarding the scams to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.

I was told long, long ago that if you want to commit a crime in plain view all you have to do is dress in some kind of repair/utility uniform and act like you know what you are doing. Rarely will people ever question you.
No, I have never tried this but reading news over the years it seems to be a true statement...

That is what all the spy movies have taught me as well. Repair men and lots o confidence, with an added dash of impatience (for anyone coming up and questioning you) will get you very far in devious works.
