So today I had a call on my cell, the number came up "Unknown" so I didn't answer it. However there was a VM left. The message claimed to be from the El Paso DOC and that either I had run out of money to receive a collect call or my service provider doesn't allow it. All I had to do was call them back with a credit card number and I could get the calls from my friend, relative, etc.
This was a first. Do people really fall for this crap?

I think old people fall for it. I will ask them for their phone number, address, etc., so I can mail it. I tell them the call is being recorded for quality assurance purposes. They usually hang up on me.
I think people just don't take 2 seconds to think about what is being said.
My mom is one of those people.

And I think you must remember this is a big business - defrauding people via telephone. It is not the kid next door playing a trick. These people are trained in what to say; tone of voice, etc. etc. Makes them most convincing.
Some employ the tactics that mediums use: You lost someone recently. Oh, you mean my dad? Yes, it is a man. Etc. Etc. You end up giving all the information to the person without realizing you are doing it.
In IKWDTS's case, it was voice mail and easier to ignore....
We had someone call here, on a Saturday, asking for my dad.
Mom had answered the phone even though she didn't know the number and it wasn't from anywhere near us.
The caller had her convinced dad was going to jail because he had supposedly missed a jury summons, or he could pay a big fine by going to walmart and getting a gift card for something like $800, and giving them the card number over the phone.
She was in a real panic and was fussing all of us out for misplacing a mystery summons and was calling dad repeatedly telling him he was going to jail if he didn't go pay it.
Now she didn't tell him it was a phone call, he thought the police were sitting in our yard.
I kept telling her it was a scam.
She wouldn't listen.
So. I just stopped with the reason and let her go.
She lost a bunch of money but she wasn't going to listen to nobody.
She still blames us for that.
But she learned her lesson.

Lily, that is awful. How could you let her do that?

That is awful.
But, it sounds like Lily tried to talk her Mom out of falling for it.
You can only push so hard, before someone digs in their heels.
It sounds like Lily's mom has a hard head.
And lost money, because she wouldn't listen to reason.
I had a phone call telling me I'm being audited by the is and gave me a phone number saying one of the is agents were waiting for my call. I hung up on them.

That's not Lily's fault.
She tried.
JMHO.
I get Lily tried to stop her. But I have to say even around here when people buy a bunch of gift cards or go to the bank to buy a bank check, the tellers are instructed to question them, warn them about scams, let them know many have been taken. Many senior's money have been saved by these policies.

We would have to know how long ago this happened.
If it was more than 6 or 8 years ago, Lily's Mom might not have been aware of the scams.
I love her, but she tends to fall for everything and she will not listen to reason, and she has to learn by trial and error.
She is one of those who expects to find polar bears dressed as clowns, sneaking up on people at gas stations and stabbing people with AIDS needles.
I love her.
I really do love her.
