The hospital made a statement, telling they handled the intake.
What struck me was that the kids didn't know basic information.
This was elementary kids, k-5.
Many couldn't tell anyone their parents names.
When asked, many responded "momma".
I remember drilling it into my kid's heads.
My full name and phone number.
Every day, I asked them my name and phone number.
I started doing that when they were able to repeat what I said.
By 3, they could tell you those two things.
I don't think parents think about how important this could be.
Do you remember when your kid could tell you your name?

Good Heavens. Back in the dark ages when I started Kindergarten that was one of the "lessons" the teacher went through quite often. What is your father's name? Your mother's name? Where do you live?
But this was before enlightened education so maybe things are different now.
Yes, I knew my parents' name, my phone number (which I still remember), my address, and the nearest cross street. My boys know our names, their grandparents' names, and I periodically quiz them on the house phone number, my cell number, my parents' phone number, and their address.
Our 3 yr old kids at church know their parents names.
I believe the school was located in East Chattanooga. Not profiling, just stating facts, East Chattanooga is considered the "wrong side of the tracks" area.
Fun fact, we have had the same home phone number my whole life.
Back to the topic.
Going into 1st, kindergarten was optional when I was a kid, I knew mom and dad's name and home phone number.
Do you teach your kids how to give directions to your house?
Do you use street names or landmarks?

Yes. It was. But it doesn't matter, does it? 6 kids are still dead.
The driver is in jail.
From what I am hearing, he deserves life in prison.

That was my number growing up. I never dared utter my parent's first names back then, don't know if I knew them. I can tell you though in this day and age, kids do know their parent's names.

I thought it was 5 kids, I know the media reported 6 at first.

DD has always known hers and our full names and our address. Gosh, since before preschool. And she can give directions to our house fairly well. But phone numbers...boy, she still struggles. She's EIGHT. We practice a lot and she will get it right, but the minute I quiz her she switches up some of the numbers. I just hope in an emergency she would be able to focus and get it. Or at least keep trying until she hits the right combo. She does better writing it down correctly than just saying it by memory, so I have told her to do that if she needs to.

My point was regarding children not knowing their parents names. Lower income families tend to be less involved with teaching their children.
I work with traumatized children. You wouldn't believe how many don't know basic safety skills. I asked one where she lived and she said "near the 7-11". I'm like - it's a big city. Which 711?" She didn't know. Just 'the 711!'
When my kids were going on field trips, or we were on trips, I'd write the information down and put it in a pocket.
I also took a picture of them that morning.
I've seen enough movies and read enough books to know if something did happen, I needed an up to date picture and be able to remember what they were wearing.

That's sad.

I can understand that. Probably disoriented and scared, at the very least. Those poor children. I also heard the driver asked if they were ready to die before taking the curve. Horrible.

I have done that when dropping my boys off for a play date. I told them if they were doing something they didn't like or uncomfortable with, tell them they weren't feeling well and call me to come get them.

So this is what I don't get. Some of the parents are now saying they have been complaining about this bus driver since August. One parent even said her child told her one day he slammed the breaks on and the kids all went forward hitting their heads and the driver laughed. He apparently did it on purpose. If I knew that, I wouldn't put my kid on that bus again.

This area of Tennessee doesn't have a lot of options.
A lot of parents may not have a car or they are working across town.
And there is no mass transit system.

I don't think it true.
At least not the people I know.
We tend to push our kids harder.
