I am heartbroken about Gatlinburg. I spent many summers there growing up. My family hasn't been evacuated, YET. If this continues, they will lose everything. They all literally live on the same road.

And yesterday, 11 students were attacked and injured on the Ohio State Campus.
It's a crazy world we live in.
Yes. But, happily, they have all survived and a quick thinking police officer was nearby and able to take down the attacker quickly.
Now, if the liberal knee-jerks would stop trying to use every tragedy to further their gun control agenda, that would be nice. The only gun in this situation was the one used by the police officer to take down the attacker.

That is awful for Gatlinburg. I can't believe how quickly it is spreading. Over 100 homes lost so far, and two elementary schools completely burned to the ground.

Lost in all the chaos at Ohio State University today was something that most people probably missed. About an hour into it, when everyone was "sheltering in place" all over campus, CNN took a phone call from a young woman who was locked inside a classroom right near where the suspect was hurting people. She said she was a graduate student and she and many others were huddled together scared and not sure what was happening outside. Then she said something made me tear up.
She said casually to the TV anchor over the phone, "But we happened to have a few 'military guys' in my class and the minute we got the text message alert of an 'active shooter on campus' they moved the rest of us away from the door and then all of them stood guard right by the door." She said they were standing there as she spoke making certain if a shooter or someone with a knife or whatever calamity tried to come through that door, they would be the first thing he'd see and they'd stop it and protect the other students or die trying.
These guys weren't armed, I'm guessing they weren't in uniform, they were just students who happened to have military training. Those "military guys" instantly put themselves on the clock and assumed the position to protect those unarmed, vulnerable students.
I thought that was impressive. I thought that was brave. I thought that was oh so very American.
I also thought you'd want to know.
I agree they do what they do for our country and us, not for attention or celebrity.
I do not like it when the very people who are willing to give their lives for us and our country are abused and ridiculed. They are willing to die to give the freedoms to those who disrespect them and our country. This is so wrong and must be changed.

The last victim of the bus crash is being laid to rest today.
She was 7, I believe.

I heard earlier today an interview with a guy who left for work, a bit later his wife called to tell him she was worried, that the fires were getting close, she was home with their two young children. This was just before evacuations started. He hasn't heard from her since and was thinking they evacuated perhaps and can't get in touch with him. tonight 3 people were found dead. I am fearful it is this woman and kids.

OMG, IKWTDS. Let's hope it's not...but sad at any case whoever the deceased might be....
It is sad in any case. I guess because I heard the father's voice, it just makes it more personal.
I hear clothing is needed. DD is cleaning out her closet plus I've done some more purging as well. I would love to donate them to this town but It may be too chaotic right now to send them.

A tip when you donate clothes in these situations: wash, fold and sort the clothes. Get bags or boxes and put all the shirts in one, pants in one, etc.
a coworker took a bunch of clothing to West Virginia after the floods. The volunteers at first told her they weren't taking clothes then (this was very soon after the water receeded) because they didn't have the time or manpower to sort it all - they were focusing on water, food and cleaning supplies. Coworker already had everything folded and sorted in separate laundry baskets. The workers then gladly put them out for people to get.

Supposedly, the three found dead were not together.
My prayers for your family Ohfour, and anyone else that's there or has family that is. The lack of rain this year is unbelievable. The Smokey Mountains are nothing but a great big tinderbox at this point.
I hope and pray that the area gets some much needed rain, a lot of it, and soon.
I am stunned. Two juveniles were arrested for setting the fires.
I heard that on the news. So sad. So many lives lost, families destroyed, and businesses burned to the ground. For what? So senseless and now they have destroyed their own lives as well, plus their families.

I just read an article about that.
How awful.
I don't know how anyone could live with causing so much harm and death.
More prayers for the folks who lost loved ones and homes.
Prayers for the families of the kids who got arrested.

They must be, beyond mortified.
I can't even imagine...
I agree with everything you said and want to highlight that I feel for their families as well.
