me in Hawaii on Wednesday, taking 1.65 million more acres of Western land for management by the federal government.

The new Bear Ears Buttes monument includes 1.35 million acres of Utah and the Gold Butte monument includes about 300,000 acres in Nevada.

That makes a total of 553 million acres of national lands and waters that Obama has repurposed for conservation and protection using the 1906 Antiquities act, more than any other president, according to the New York Times. More than 80 percent of Nevada and about 65 percent or Utah is owned by the federal government, according to National Public Radio.

 

Utah Republican leaders in Congress were furious after Obama decided to designate the controversial Bear Ears monument.

The govt owns 85 percent of Nevada, 66 percent of Utah, 62 percent of both Idaho and Alaska, and 53 percent of Oregon.


The federal government also owns significant portions of California and Wyoming, at 48 percent each; Arizona, at 42 percent; Colorado, at 36 percent; New Mexico, at 35 percent; Montana, at 29 percent; and Washington state, at 28 percent.

Why? The absolute FOUNDATION of America is private property ownership.

Yes, and we have a larger population as well. Why should the govt preemptively OWN the land? I think that is totally wrong and flies in the face of the foundation of our country of private property ownership. Once you erode private ownership, that is really destructive to our country. I am OK with having some National parks. However, does that seem REASONABLE that the govt should own 85% of any State?

well, am more concerned with what they are/are planning to do with it than the mere fact that they own it--during the cold war, vast swaths of the pacific northwest/northwest were owned/operated by the strategic missile force--was necessary to decrease distance to targets in USSR and thereby shorten delivery times--was a different mindset thirty years ago, you need to remember--at that time a nuclear exchange between us and the soviets was a real possibility--also,by having the weapons far away from major population centers it was hoped that a direct attack on the weapons themselves would reduce probable civilian casualties because of the force's remote locations

of course, an attack on major population centers (versus military installations)would render the secondary purpose of the missile force's location rather moot
