Co-worker issue (or maybe I'm the issue)
Permalink

I've been friends with my co-worker for several years but this election has brought out the worst in him. So much so that I unfriended him on Facebook because of his hateful anti white person posts.

Now at work, anytime he and I are in the same vicinity he will discuss very loudly with whoever is around that trump supporters are all a bunch of racists, people who are pro life are heartless and sick in the head, and more. It's gotten to the point that I'm starting to feel harassed, it's almost like he's seeking me out to degrade me and embarrass me.

Do I just suck it up and try to put him on mute, or confront him and tell him if he doesn't knock it off I'm going to complain about his hate speech?

I'm sorry you are dealing with this vette. If he continues to make remarks you should definitely go to HR or supervisor. He sounds like he has no problem harassing you nor someone who is reasonable enough to talk to.

Thanks Lindley, I hate having to throw someone under the bus but I'm really getting sick of it

I'd be heading into HR if I was in your position. And don't feel bad about it. You won't be "throwing him under the bus", he's walking around in the middle of the access lane at a bus stop. If a bus hits him, it's his own fault.

You unfriended him, he isn't talking TO YOU about this stuff, but you feel harrassed.

I'd say ignore.

Is he talking louder than usual or just like he normally talks? If he is just talking normally you might have to just deal.

He is insulting and harassing a group of people, calling them names, etc. Tell HR.

Is this person white or some other race? You can report it, doesn't mean anything will change. I have been working for decades and it seems the PC type talk is acceptable and they get away with it.

Any chance of going to HR and asking them to put out a general notice memo that politics in the office are no longer tolerated?

Spork him!

Seriously, he is creating a hostile work environment and HR should be notified.

After the election, children on the boys' bus would chant, "Trump sucks" all the way home. It lasted for two weeks.   The bus driver didn't feel he could do anything about it, until the head of transportation gave him the okay to restrict the chanting as it was a driving distraction for him.   And yes, I notified the head of transportation of the children's behavior.  It ended immediately.  The bus driver was happy, too.

 That's funny.

Mom drove a school bus for years.

I can't tell you how many times she shut the noise down.

It amazes me when I hear an adult say "I didn't think I could discipline the kids".

Thanks for all the advice, what makes me sad is we've been friends for so long. And he's not white, he's Arabic, so if we went to HR I'm not sure which of our minorities would win out, me being a woman or him being Arabic lol.

And I am sure he is directing his diatribe at me and not just discussing in general.

You don't have to be a minority to be protected under Title VII. All persons of all races/color/ethnicity, etc., are protected. Here are the elements of a hostile work environment claim:

1) you were subjected to [slurs, insults, jokes or other verbal comments or physical contact or intimidation of a racial nature] [sexual advances, requests for sexual conduct, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature] [conduct affecting other Title VII protected characteristics];

2) the conduct was unwelcome;

3) the conduct was sufficiently severe or pervasive to alter the conditions of your employment and create a [racially] [sexually] [other Title VII protected characteristic] abusive or hostile work environment;

4. You perceived the working environment to be abusive or hostile; and

5. a reasonable [woman] [man] in your circumstances would consider the working environment to be abusive or hostile.

Whether the environment constituted a [racially] [sexually] [other Title VII protected characteristic] hostile work environment is determined by looking at the totality of the circumstances, including the frequency of the harassing conduct, the severity of the conduct, whether the conduct was physically threatening or humiliating or a mere offensive utterance, and whether it unreasonably interfered with an employee’s work performance.

He's probably miffed that you unfriended him so he's acting like a little bit.ch trying to annoy you as much as possible. I would try and ignore him and perhaps have an amused poor dear there there look on your face

If you do go to HR, I doubt you even have to bring up his name in particular. This should be a no brainer. I mean really... enough with the politics in the business invironment.

Well, i have worked many years. And, i have seen a lot of liberals get away with making comments. In fact, recently, i was a teacher negotiations meeting and one of the people in the meeting started making Trump comments (prior to the election). That had NOTHING to do with our negotiations. And, others sat there nodding their heads in agreement. I could have said something but i really get tired of. I rarely see conservatives bringing politics into things the way liberals do. However, Trump won soooo i got the last laugh. lol
