I've never understood why.

I'm watching Fixer Upper and they seem to paint every piece of brick they come across.

I thought one reason to use brick was so you didn't have to paint.

I don't get it either. Especially when they paint it white.

But why?

Ours fireplace is red brick.

It needed serious cleaning when we moved in, but I love it.

Our house is grey brick, again, a good cleaning was all it needed.

I know it is personal preference.

It depends on the brick.

I can understand, changing the brick color on a fireplace.

It's a small change. And it might look great!

Painting a brick house?

I don't think I would do that.

One of the reasons, we bought out house, was for the pretty brick. I would never paint it.

I would never paint exterior brick.

Interior brick is another story. It's very chic right now to paint brick. It gives the wall a cleaner look to have it all the same color. I like the look vs the look of old brick. It's much cheaper than getting the fireplace re-bricked.

I hate red, so if I had to have brick it would probably be painted straight away

There is red brick all around the basement, like a chair rail and the fireplace. I like it. In my last house, I had river stone, so various shades of earth tones, my choice that's what I prefer.

I would paint brick on the exterior of I did not like the color. There are some brick colors that I just don't like, but I might otherwise like the house and its location. So it would be an easy fix.

My brick fireplace uses the same brick that is on the outside of the house. While I like the color on the outside, it makes for a very dark family room inside. It's a brown color, and darker than I would like. So I will be painting it one of these days, probably in the next month now that I have had time to rest from the holidays. If the smear doesn't work out, it will become white just like on Fixer Uppers! (Several of my neighbors have painted theirs white and said it was the best thing they ever did as far as their family rooms).

I personally like the whitewash look on brick. But a lot of times with these shows, it's more cost-effective to paint it than it is to clean it.

I think you have to clean the brick if you are going to paint it.

I guess my big thing is I go for the darker stuff. I love dark cabinets, dark brown rocks, dark expose beams. It makes it feel cozy to me.

I love dark, too, but my house, the way it faces, tends to be dark to begin with so it needs brightening up.

This is me.  The family room gets very little natural light, so the room needs to be a bit brighter.  I've got a schitt ton on things on my list before I get to that though.  We recently figured out that our entire house was wallpapered.  THE ENTIRE THING.  And when they put it up for sale, they just painted over the wallpaper.  You see, it's  not really a great idea to have wallpaper in your bathrooms...especially painted over.  So the walls are peeling.  Oh, and remember the homeless friend that lived with us a couple of years ago, that tiled our hall bath for free (be he was a "master tiler")...ugh!  It was ugly then, but now the tiles are coming lose and cracking. And pulling away from the tub/walls.  So now I have to have someone re-tile.

I get zero natural light, there are no windows in my basement. The walls are a light blue and the carpet is gray. But the furniture is dark blue and darker woods and the dark red brick. I didn't choose it, but I like my cave

Our bathrooms, kitchen and dining room were wallpapered. My DH, bless his heart for trying, removed the wallpaper. Badly. When I re-painted the dining room I had a heck of a time as it bubbled up and peeled in a lot of places. After much scraping I eventually got it all done. When we had renovations done, I usually slipped in some drywall repair here and there and got the bathrooms and kitchen fixed. It really didn't cost much, as the drywall guy was there anyway for whatever project I was having done. I also had them repair the holes we had to make in the basement wall and ceiling when the pool went in and when the fireplace went in.

There are some older houses that are that awful orange brick, and when people paint those a nice tan or gray - they actually do look better.

Yuck. My entire house was built with the most awful orange bricks. We painted it before we even moved in. We painted it grey and I think it looks gorgeous now. Some bricks are nice. Others are just ugly as hell.

It's funny because no houses around here are brick so I'm just not used to seeing it. I was amazed when I was in Texas and momala and I went to visit FWM and NJN how many brick houses there were.

Vette, there's a reason you see so many brick homes in Texas.

Texas has a big termite population! And those suckers love to eat wood.

Our realtor clued us in when we moved here.

So the the brick on my house and fireplace are not solid red brick. There is a variation on the individual bricks with some white, and black but not solid. I love the look on the house. but the fireplace is fairly large and brightening it up will make the interior so much more newer looking. I don't want a solid color but more of an emphasis on white, not stark white though. Which is why I want to learn more about the German Smear painting.

When you are talking about exterior brick, you need to
know the difference between "real brick" and "brick face".
Looking at the exterior; if every 7 rows has a row that
looks like the bricks have been placed with the ends
facing out, rather than the long sides, that is a real
brick exterior, which is two bricks deep. Every seven
rows, they rotate the bricks so the short ends are on
the outside. This greatly increases the stability of the
exterior.
If there is no "odd" row, that means the structure is
"brick face" - bricks added for cosmetic reasons, with
no structural advantage. Brick face houses are just as
likely to be damaged as clapboard houses in hurricanes
and tornadoes, while real brick structures can withstand
harsher forces.

Once I get motivated, I am going to take the flat white, dilute it 50% to start with, apply, have a sponge and a rag handy with a bucket of water for rinsing, and wipe it off haphazardly until I get the kind of look I am going for.  I'll let you know how it all works out.
