5 Month Old's Death Ruled a Homicide
Permalink

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) – The death of a 5-month-old girl who was found dead last month in a Kernville home has been ruled a homicide by Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees.

Lees said autopsy and toxicology reports confirmed that Summer Chambers died of dehydration and starvation.

He said toxicology reports on the baby’s parents, Jason Chambers, 27, and Chelsea Cardaro, 19, found that they died from acute fentanyl overdoses.

Lees said the amount of fentanyl in Cardaro's body was four times above the lethal range and Jason Chambers was 2½ times above the lethal range.

He said fentanyl is more dangerous than the heroin that is being seen more frequently in the region.

Lees initially said the parents likely died of heroin overdoses. Heroin was found at the scene on Dec. 22.

He said the baby died around Dec. 20, four or five days after the parents, whose deaths were ruled accidental.

“It’s unfathomable to think what this child endured while it was alive,” acting Johnstown police Chief Jeff Janciga said at a news conference. “I hope we never have to prosecute a person for the death of their child.”

Because both parents are dead, Janciga said district attorney officials and police detectives are investigating the baby’s death.

But, he said, “I’m not sure where the investigation is at this point.”

There were 94 overdose deaths in Cambria County in 2016, with dozens of other cases still to be determined, Lees said.

He said 16 people have died from overdoses in 2017.

Yes. And, nobody thought of this baby or where they were for 5 days. You wonder were there any other relatives.

I don't know, it doesn't seem like that far of a stretch.

It really doesn't seem odd, to me, Lily.

Conor and Jessi live right around the corner, from us.

We don't drop in on them. We always call or text, if we are going to drop something off.

If they didn't show up for, "Sunday Dinner",  I would send out a search party.

(But, they always know what's happening. We text them. And ask if they will be down, for dinner,)

We don't pester them.

They know we are around, if they need us.

We respect their privacy. And don't drop in, unless they invite us.

We can go 4 or 5 days, with out talking.

It's very sad to say, but we wouldn't know, if something went that wrong.

I agree that several days and no one noticed isn't that much of a stretch, especially if the parents weren't the most responsible citizens (read: people with jobs to miss them).

I just think it's stupid to charge dead people with homicide.

It sounds like an incredibly tragic turn of events.

The coroner has RULED it a homicide. That doesn't mean they are filing charges agains the dead. That is just the coroner's ruling. It is negligent homicide at least. They knowlingly were at least drugging themselves into a stupor and could not care for their baby. They probably have done it multiple times.
However, still sad that there was NO family checking in.

I did not see where they were attempting to charge anything, just trying to find the cause of death. Probably need it for the death certificate.

This is just a horribly sad situation for that child. Horrible.

5 DAYS that child suffered. That is truly awful and despicable. However, the opioid epidemic is destroying so many lives and families. Why can we not COPE any more as human beings in life that people resort to that?

The parents aren't charged, obviously. The death just has to be classified

Ah.

Misread.

I still don't think it's strange no one talked to or saw them in the 5 days.

Yes, it is tragically sad.

We both live states away from any family and sometimes go weeks without calling because life is busy.

I understand they were drug addicts but still, to me 5 days is not that long.

Hell, I live 20 minutes from my mother and a mile from my sister and I talk to my mother once a week (if that) and my sister a couple of times a year!

Five days is nothing. Although, if I KNEW they were drug addicts and had a newborn, I'd probably check in daily.
