looking to buy a rifle for my lady and am trying to decide which caliber would best suit her ( is going to be a surprise )--she has extensive experience with a .243 but was years ago in her teens and am looking at a rifle that will be HERS only--something with more juice and more reach than a .243 but will still be comfortable for her to shoot--not talking a $5-$6k custom job but something more along the lines of the Savage 11 / Lady Hunter--designed specifically for woman's proportional neck/shoulder/arm geometry
Do any of y'all have experience with hunting rifles?

No experience here with hunting. I am in search of the perfect gun for myself. I have a few guns that I was either given, inherited or recieved in leiu of loan repayment. All are designed more for a man. I like them but want a better fit.
But I would not want one as a surprise. I would want to feel it out personally so it fit me. Maybe get her a gift certificate to a gun store or BassPro or Cabelas.
I think that surprising her with one is not a good idea. Can you go to your local gun shop and get a gift card and then bring her to the store after she receives your gift to have her try a few to get the best fit? A gun is not a ring that you can resize. KWIM? I do like your line of thought on trying to surprise her though.

I've had a .22 squirrel rif flexible that was good enough for small game.
I'm not a hunter, just used it to get rid of stray cats.

well, we don't really hunt anymore so maybe was a bit unclear--would be primarily for shooting paper--she is proficient with firearms but want to get her a rifle and optics that are HER'S--as said, her principal experience with rifles has been with a .243 which is effective on deer but am wanting to get her a weapon that's capable at 300/400m but not a .30cal like i'm used to our some magnum cannon that would be difficult for her to handle
you talk with all the gun buffs and after a while everything begins to blur--there are many opinions out there but was hoping to connect with someone that's got a favorite they like and have used a lot

I understand what you are trying to say. But I still feel that the best solution is for her to pick out the gun for herself.
Is there a range near you that you can rent different guns to see what she likes best? I know we have them here (Metro Philadelphia) and they have bigger places in Las Vegas. Kind of like test driving a car. You don't buy a car without taking it for a test drive.
I know what you mean. I'm not a hunter, my experience has been on the farm, around the barns and such.
With riffles, I think it's important for a person to pick out their own.
Personal preference and all.

well, will most likely end up doing this--up to her, of course, but would prefer she picks something other than an AR-15 configuration weapon--though excellent platforms am a bit leery of carrying one around in a vehicle, etc.--you step out of a vehicle with an AR/AK platform weapon and all the LE boys/girls go to full auto right then and there--can get a bit tense

I would inquire about kickback. My chest and shoulder were bruised up pretty badly after several skeet shooting rounds. I had a colt over/under. That's all I know about it. It was the owner's personal shot gun I believe. It was pretty.
I can shoot, and I have very good aim, but other than that....just show me how to load it and I'm good to go.
