I like to watch MASH.  Yeah it is an old show now and I have every single episode memorized. But, the thing is every thing went digital years ago, including transferring old shows to digital media.  So why are these old MASH shows so grainy?  Even I Love Lucy shows are not grainy.  It just ticks me off.

if you haven't already, you should read " mash " the original novel--so much better than the series--hooker had an ear for dialogue that was near perfect--the film was excellent as well--the series......meh, after alda took over the writing it lost the veracity/trauma/starkness of the early episodes becoming instead a sort of " family " war series a la hogan's heroes

I LOVE the grainy shows! I'm a purist. The old shows are the best shows...

Ok but how is I Love Lucy not Grainy, much older.

What else do you not get?

Could it be an intentional choice of the company that converted it? Maybe they wanted to keep the "grainy, in the field" look.

I loved MASH as a kid. I am wondering if it is a deliberate choice to keep the grainy look?

The owners of the content make the decision to digitize or not.  In the music industry, it's called re-mastering.  They use programs to remove any ticks or pops.  That is exactly why vinyl has made such a HUGE comeback.  People want the purity.

Vinyl is always better than digital, in my opinion. I've yet to come across a CD that sounded better than the record. The CD may be "cleaner", but the vinyl is more "warm and alive".
