DH and I have been invited to a neighbor's Quinceanera.
I know absolutely nothing about this celebration.
What are the duties/obligations of a guest? Gifts? Cards?
Mass is at 3:30; Reception and Dance at 5:30.
The Church will provide concession service after the Dinner.
Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
It's a 15th birthday party, for the young lady.
A birthday card, and gift, would be appreciated.
(I've never been invited to one, Momala. In Hispanic culture, this is a young girls introduction to being an adult, rather than being seen as a child.)
A flock of flirting flamingos is pure, passionate, pink pandemonium-a frenetic flamingle-mangle-a discordant discotheque of delirious dancing, flamboyant feathers, and flamingo lingo.

It's a Mexican "coming out" party. I've never been, and never even heard of them until I went shopping for my wedding dress and there was a family shopping for quinceanera dresses. And I was married to a Mexican in one of my previous lives. The dresses were pretty gaudy, IMO. But whatever.....
I would think a card with a gift card would suffice. I'm not sure what I would wear....probably something you might wear to a wedding?
It began as a celebration of the girl becoming a woman and being ready for marriage. Often it was the first time she wore heels and makeup. People who attended the party gave gifts of money or livestock to be included in her dowry. It's actually a pretty sexist practice. The girl is on display for the town so that a match can be made. There isn't an equivalent for boys in the culture as there is in the Jewish faith.

It is a special birthday celebration for a girl where she transitions from a child to a young lady. It's much like a cross between a sweet sixteen and a coming out party.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
The sweet part is when the dad takes her flats off and puts her high heels on.
Then they have a dance.
It's very sweet.

I don't see it as sexist at all. My cousin was a debutante. She went on to attend a culinary arts school in NY and was a career woman. I don't believe she ever married. (I never saw much of her as she was away at boarding school but was reintroduced to her when I was in my 20's.)
She later became the personal chef to Bruce Willis at his ranch in Montana. Something happened, however, and I'm not sure what it was, but she died a few years ago. Her mother, my second cousin whom I visited with last October at the beach house in Cali, isn't able to talk about it.
