California School Bans Tag, Says Game ‘Too Rough’

Gold Ridge Elementary School in Folsom, California has banned the game of tag.

Principle David Frankel sent a note home to parents saying, “Students were instructed that physical contact including tag games, touch football, etc. were not allowed on the yard.”

Why would this time-honored tradition of playground fun get the axe? According to school district spokesman Daniel Thigpen, things had gotten just a bit too physical. Thigpen explained, “In this case, kids were getting too rough…so the school told them to stop playing those games… It’s not uncommon for a school to enact specific recess rules to address specific behavior problems.”

Students will face disciplinary action should they not comply. The punishments will begin with a referral, and then a parent-teacher conference, according to school officials.

According to The Daily Mail, the school has claimed that the note was only sent home to some parents, and there’s some confusion over whether the ban applies to all students.

Fourth-grader Mallory Giddens is not a fan of the new rule. Giddens told KOVR television, “I don’t really like it. I mean I don’t really play tag but I don’t think it’s fair to everyone else that plays tag!”

Giddens continued, “My principal, he doesn’t want us to have tag at school because people, they touch too hard. Sometimes they push people over and my principal doesn’t want anyone getting hurt.”

Great. If teachers (whoever) see someone who is abusing (pushing, kicking, punching) whatever, than do something about that child. Don't ban playing.

? The school, according to what you posted.  You're welcome to ask, though.

Another example of the wimpifying of our children. Why are we not teaching them personal responsibility? Why not if YOU play too rough YOU don't get to play anymore instead of stopping every ones fun?

This is absurd.

But, it is California.

I was surprised to learn they no longer play dodgeball at school. I used to love that game. But God forbid, someone throw a red rubber ball at someone.

Punish the kids that are pushing other kids over instead of ruining everyone's fun. This is just ridiculous.

Or, if everyone else is too rough for you, find somewhere else to play.

They are not breaking the rules by playing a game that is not supposed to be rough. That falls on the ones pushing people over. THEY should be the ones to find another game don't ya think?

Well, some games are rougher than others. If the game is aggressive throughout, find somewhere else to play.  Chances are it is that some of the kids aren't as fast and aren't as strong.  They can go find somewhere else to play if they are outmatched.  One or two bullies?  Yes.  They should be removed.  Not playing another game.  Removed all together.  Detention, sit in the corner, prohibited from play, whatever.  But if it is a group of kids who will likely go on to play football and are big and strong, the game will be rougher.  They shouldn't have to tone down their physical abilities for the one kid who isn't as strong or fast.  I don't walk into a ballet class and complain that people in it shouldn't wear pointe shoes because I can't wear pointe shoes.  Why ban pointe shoes just because others can't do it?  Take a different class - one at a skill level I can participate in.

Tag is not supposed to be a rough game so in this instance it should be the bullies looking for a new game. Not sure why you think they should be able to chase off the less rough and tumble kids when the game doesn't call for roughness.

You know they can't single out the troublemakers because that would embarrass them. So they punish the whole class.

I'll remember my first year in the government they held an all hands meeting to discuss, among other things, rules that were being violated and how they were going to be enforced. I was thinking, "WTF? I am not doing that!" Then I talked to a veteran employee who told me they address the violation not with the violator but with the entire office. Far be it to actually discipline the wrong-doer, apparently.

Tag?!?

Seriously. Stop the planet. I want off. NOW!

This is insane. How about we just mummify (without the killing and eviscerating part) all the little darlings until they turn 18, and then they'll magically turn into good upstanding citizens with a great work ethic.

Tag is a prelude to football and rugby.  It's about developing speed and dexterity.  If you are in a group that plays harder, than don't complain.  If you don't want to play that way, find another game.  Kids can choose.  We don't have to do it for them.  You don't like the way the game is played?  Leave the game.  You're the only ******* being a dick?  You get sent away.

Why can't the rough and tumble kids play in a rough and tumble way? Tag is tag. It is played differently by whoever is playing it.

Yes tag is tag. You TOUCH someone and they're it. You don't knock them over or push them around. I'm not sure what game of tag you're playing. Again if you are pushing other kids whether you're tougher than them or not you're a bully and need to be taken out of the game. Stop pushing the other kids and go play football or rugby and let the kids playing TAG have their game.

I remember being hurt during recess as a little kid a few times.

Dislocated my thumb, teacher took me to the office, the secretary popped it back, put an acend bandage around my hand, told me to be careful and go play. I did.

Another time I fell off the top of the biggest slide and knocked all the air out of me. I lay there until I could breathe again, went to tell the teacher and she said I'd be alright. I was.

And nowadays, if a kid just hints to being hurt the parents are called.

Heck, I seen them lock down the school cause a kid broke their arm and they called an ambulance.

Why can't there be more than one game of tag?

It's not tag if you're pushing people down or shoving them. Tag does not involve shoving or pushing where I come from.

But that doesn't mean that, during the game, there may be vigorous play.

I've gotten pushed during tag.

I've fallen.

The whole point is that the school shouldn't be banning tag b/c some of the kids are too rough. They should be dealing with the kids they think are too rough.

I agree with you all. I do wonder if it is more afraid of sue happy parents then a child's chance of a scraped knee.

You did NOT say this at all. You kept saying the kids who didn't like being pushed around should go start their own game.

I see LL saw the same thing Tig. You never once said punish the kids who were pushing, you said make the other less rambunctious kids go start their own game. Like the kids being pushed around should be punished instead of the pushers.
