Never heard of this.

Apparently this is the 10th year.

Supposedly, the entire world participates by turning anything non-essential off for an hour at 8pm.

Have ya'll heard about it?

Not real sure what it accomplishes.

I would think it would save a lot of energy. However, I think 8 pm is a tough time, that's dark for some people. With everything off, you couldn't even see to read a book or play a board game.

 Well, reading a book or playing a game has nothing to do with being plugged in.  It should be on a Saturday at say 10 am, when everyone has light and can spend the time actually doing "unplugged" things.

My thing is, I had never heard of it.

I also think I don't understand the point of it.

Is it to promote interactions between people or to conserve energy?

Probably a bit of both. But at 8 pm my tv is on. Like LL said 10 am would be better. Other than my computer I have one light on & have been reading.

No one uses lights during the day, so you are not sacrificing anything, you're not conserving anything.

 I use lights all day long, plus air conditioning and/or heat, the washing machine, the dishwasher, the TV, the radio, the computer....

 It would help if the world unplugged for an hour.  Think of all the energy saved.  However, people are not going to do it when they need lights for homework, work, etc.
