Dear Abby: Husband Paints Toenails
Permalink

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married for 10 years. We are both in our 50s. Six months ago, I found him with nail polish on his toes. When I asked him about it, he explained that it started in his 20s when a girlfriend painted his toes, and he liked it. He has been painting his toes ever since. He said he doesn't wear polish all the time, but he does it for himself and he likes how it looks. I asked if he was a cross-dresser, and he assured me he isn't.

I'm not sure how I should feel about this. I'm writing for opinions from you and others. I can't turn to my friends because I don't want this to become small-town gossip. -- PAINTED IN NEW JERSEY

DEAR PAINTED: You asked for an opinion, so here's mine. Frankly, I'm surprised it has taken you 10 years to notice this. Because your husband enjoys painting his toenails, look the other way and don't obsess about it. We all have quirks, and what he's doing is harmless.

P.S. I have it on good authority that he isn't the only man who does it.

LOL! She's been married to him for ten years, and just noticed?

Well, if this is his one quirk, I'm with Abbly.  I'd probably forget about it.

I'm in the "took you ten years to notice" camp.

I think it's a new thing and she should trust her gut.

Good point. Seems odd she would not have noticed for 10 years but that might be possible. If so, then if it isn't a new thing then i would say ignore it. Though, i would wonder what else is there that I don't know. I think it is possible that it is new and this is a cover story as well.

It would give me pause. Although I do remember in the 1980's a neighbor wearing clear nail polish. He's straight and still married to the same woman. When I saw him last, a few years ago, he was not wearing polish.

I would ignore it, but keep an eye out to see what else he likes.....

LOL after 10 years this is an issue? Is she so unobservant of her husband she is just noticing this now?

She should offer to do pedi's for him and share her polish. Honestly... if this is the only problem in your marriage you are a lucky.

When dad had both his knees replaced, while he was still recovering, mom took him to get his first pedicure.

He was in rehab, but couldn't care for his own feet at the time.

He protested for minute but then he relaxed and enjoyed it so much, he went to sleep.

Later that evening he noticed he had nail polish on his toes, clear, but polish.

Now he just asks that they leave that part out.

I've been there when men have had pedicures. A friend of mine, a very obese man with diabetes, gets his done because of his disease and because he can't bend over and reach his own toes to clip them properly. But he nixes the polish part. He just does it because he has to take care of his feet.
