Pet Food/ Raw Diet
Permalink

I just watched "Pet Fooled" on Netflix about the dog food industry.  Very interesting.  And, makes you think about what you should really feed your pet.  Some of the vets on there recommend a raw diet of raw meat, eggs, bones, and some vegs, etc.  Their point of view makes a lot of sense.   And, i think i might at least start supplementing my pooch with a bit of that.   What do you think?

I think it's important to choose a good food, which requires research, but that dog food is ok. My Golden ate good dog food only and occasional treats - no table scraps - and lived to be almost 16.

Corgi eats Pro Plan, which is a middle of the road dog food. He's been on it most of his life, and is 14 so it seems to be working for him. Sure, there are higher quality foods out there, but I've decided to stick with what works and he likes.

The only reason I would down grade his food is if he stopped eating. Sometimes older dogs will stop eating and lose weight. In that case, Beniful it is. It has a high fat content and is usually more appetizing. That stuff is like fast food. You can live on it, but that's not really recommended.

Every dog we have had has eaten mostly what we eat.

The outside dogs were given Ol' Roy with it.

Our inside dogs just eat what we eat.

Sometimes they would get dog food.

Monster flat refuses to eat dog food.

I looked into making my own dog food for Jupiter, a few years ago.

It's not easy to make. And you need a high powered meat grinder, one that is able to grind bones, to be able to do it properly.

(Another case of the expense and time, probably aren't worth the effort,in the long run.)

We feed Jupiter Blue Buffalo grain free, and top it with 1/4 can of Wellness 95% meat.

I also cook baby carrots in sodium free beef broth, and add a can of green beans. One batch lasts about a week. We give her that, so she thinks she's getting our food during dinner. With a few small bites of our meat.)

(Wayne has spoiled this dog, something awful.)wink

If I'm making eggs on the weekend, we'll give her one.

Some dogs love baby carrots and green bean raw, and they make a great low calorie snack. (Jupie won't eat them raw. I have to cook them.)

You might give it a try, and see if your pooch likes them, LGS.

Corgi loves vegetables. He likes carrots (raw or canned), green beans, peas, etc. he also likes apples and watermelon. Among other fruits.

Steer away from onions and grapes. Both are toxic to dogs in large quantities.

the raw food diet is EXTREMELY healthy for dogs, but it IS a lot of work and can get expensive. My advise would be to keep kibble in their lives for those times in life where you dont have a chicken to toss them. Kibble in the morning and raw at night. This way their tummies are producing the enzymes to break down both. If you go cold turkey one way or the other, you could have a pup with a very upset tummy for a while.

With Sheba, we were told never to give her raw meat, to make sure she never killed anything, too.

She was a timber wolf and only 2 generations domesticated.

And she was the best K9 we ever had.

They said it was so she didn't get the taste of blood.

So, she got a blend just for her, can't remember the name, but it was very high in protein.

And she got the holiday ham bone.

Z gets his kibble plus whatever I eat. There is no need to pay extra for high end canned stuff (full of preservatives) or for raw stuff. Potatoes and sweet potatoes are great for the intestine & digestion, rice is a great starch and Z will eat any protein. I only can't give him chicken/wheat because of allergies. I give him fish it gives him fish breath. He also gets any fruit or vegetables that I eat. His favorite is apple. He spits banana out - generally finding the most annoying place to spit it; like down your shirt if you're holding him.

He doesn't get grapes, tomatoes, garlic, etc., but I don't eat anything that isn't healthy and he gets a great variety. Dogs who get the same protein will develop an intolerance over time, so I rotate regularly.

What about bones ?  Do u use boneless?  I know some dogs have trouble with bones.  But i heard raw bones were better.

I was shocked when my friend said chicken bones. I was like really? like leg bone, breast bone? nothing is a problem? he was like nope... all of it is good. He cuts the whole chick up into large pieces, freezes them, and then pulls out a piece for them to knaw on and eat when it is dinner time. Veggies and rice... all of it goes together.

We don't give any dog chicken bones, they splinter.

Monster has a nice thick ham bone right now, he won't let anyone near it.

OK.  In the last couple days, i started adding some raw egg.  Then tonight i gave my dog some broccoli.  She loved it. I wonder if she will fart more though! lol

I would love to do a full on raw diet but I just don't have the time. I feed a dog treat in the morning and a kibble dinner at night, no people food except an occasional piece of cheese or something as a treat

With raw food, like meats or eggs, I'd worry about salmonella or ecoli.

You'd have to keep the food bowl and area very clean.

Which means every time they ate, you'd immediately need to clean their bowl and the area.

Plus, any bacteria in the raw food won't get cooked out.

We use to give Andrea, our pick-a-poo, raw eggs in the morning.

She loved them.

But she did get sick from time to time and I think it was because we'd give it to her while we were leaving and she didn't always eat it right away.

I don't know for sure, but it may be something to think about.

Yes, that is a consideration. However, animals are designed to eat uncooked, raw foods. But, I agree there is a difference between fielding that in the wild and chasing and killing prey versus getting it in the grocery store.

The difference is, in the wild, a dog will eat his kill immediately most times, there hasn't been time for the bacteria to grow.

Also, they won't eat in the same place in the wild.

Just a thought.
